75,000 COOL ARIDTHROATS Thousands Flock to Canada for 4.4 Beer. Bu United Pres* WINDSOR, Ontario, May 22—Approximately 75,000 persons, twothirds of them Americans, already have paid between $150,000 and $200,000 here to test the “kick” of the 4.4 per cent beer that went on sale yesterday. These figures are based on reports from hotel and restaurant proprietors who have sold nearly a million bottles of the new beer to thirsty pilgrims who came from far and near by train, airplane, automobile, bicycle and afoot. Despite the Immense crowd that was entertained, not one arrest was made. That the new beer is not of intoxicating strength was indicated by the fact that a SIOO prize offered by a brewer to the first person to get drunk on 4.4 per cent went unclaimed. TWO BANKS LIQUIDATE Two State banks, the Hoosier State Bank of Stilesvllle and the Farmers' State of Colfax have notified Eben H. Wolcott, State bank commissioner, of voluntary liquidation. Each of the banks was capitalized for $25,000. In each town, there were two banks. SCHORTKMEIEIt SPEAKES Secretary of State Frederick E. Bu United Press COLUMBUS, Ohio, May * 22. Pledging himself to restore harmony by peaceful methods within the Presbyterian Church, Dr. Charles R. Erdman, Princeton, N. J., today took his post as moderator of the General Assembly to which he was elected late Thursday. Dr. Erdman’s election was an overwhelming victory for the modernist group in the assembly and constituted stark defeat for William Jennings Bryan and the fundamentalists. Bryan’s candidate, Dr. W. O. Thompson, president, Ohio State University, withdrew his name at the last minute. Dr. Erdman defeated Dr. Lapsley A. McAfee, Berkeley, Cal., 470 to 420.

TWO DOZEN IN CLEAN-UP NET Arrests Made by Police on Rikhoff’s Orders. Twenty-two men and two women were under arrest today in efforts of police to carry out Chief Herman F. Rikhoff’s orders “that the town must be cleaned up and the lid put on tight." Eight of the number were arrested by booze squads. Fourteen were arrested in investigation of thefts and hold-ups. Homes of Salathiel Pierson, 48, of 765 Virginia Ave., and Ralph Brown of 820 Missouri St., were raided. James Forey, 42, of 805 Church St., failed to convince police that alcohol he had was bought to rub his horse. Other arrests Include five on drunkenness charges, twelve on vagrancy and five on assault and battery. WILL GO TO WEST POINT Indianapolis Boy, 18, Is Givnn Military Appointment. Norman Polnier, 18, son of Mrs. Lela Poinler of 2833 N. Talbott St., has been appointed to the United States military academy at West Point, it was learned today. Polnier is attending Nortwestern University at Evanston. 111. He formerly lived at Huntington, Ind., and was appointed from the eleventh Congressional district. Poinler attended Butler University lost semester. FIVE COTTAGES PLANNED The Salvation Army, planning to add five cottages to its camp northeast of the city this summer, has sent out letters asking contributions.
