U. S. TO STUDY STOCK DISEASE ON FRENCH SOIL Won’t Risk Bringing Deadly Germ to This Country for Observation. Bu Time s Special WASHINGTON, May 22.—The hunt for the germ causing the dread foot-and-mouth disease, which has attacked herds and flocks in this country over a period of forty years, is again in full cry Three American scientists have Just landed in France to attempt to Isolate the germ so that a preventive and curative vaccine can be perfected. At the moment this country is entirely free from the dread disease, the last trace having been stamped out in Texas some months ago. That is why the Department of Agriculture is spending $75,000 and sending men thousands of miles to wage the Scintiflc hunt German Scientists For a time last year it was believed two German scientists, Frosch and Dahmen, had discovered the germ, but Dr John R Mohler, chief of the Bureau of Animal Industry, is dubious over their claims When Mohler made his request for $75,000 to hunt the germ some Congressmen wondered why the research couldn’t be carried on in this country to liminate expense Mohler explained "I would rather not have $75,000 or 75 cents if I had to do the work here in Washington or at any other point in the United States,” he said. “Why?” asked Congressman Madden. "Because I would not to take the risk of having the cirus.escape from the laboratory and cause great losses to the live stock industry of the United States ” To Get Virus Mohler then explained that before a vaccine can be prepared scientists must have some of the actual foot-and-mouth disease virus to experiment with and this presents untold dangers. The reason the experiments can be carried on abroad is *hat in many European countries the disease is now prevalent. The three scientists conducting the research are Dr. P. K. Olitzsky, of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research; Dr. Jacob Traum, of the University of California, and Dr. Harry W. Schoening, of the Bureau of Animal Husbandry. They ire now at French government aboratories at Alfort near Paris. The men will spend at least eighteen months abroad and possibly longer unless their efforts to locate the cause of foot-and-muth disease are successful sooner.
