Martha Lee Says GIRL FLIRTS DEFENDED AS WITHIN NEW RIGHTS
In the midst, of letters condemning girls who flirt to scorn and disrespect, I have received one in defense of such girls. The defense consists mainly in a justification of the girls under the new “single standard” of moral conduct.
“Why should girls be criticised for flirting,- any more than men?” the defender, a girl, writes. “The men say they laugh at girls who flirt, but it seems to me they are no worse than the men themselves. I think it is time for the men to see girls have a ri;ht to do the things the men do.” This girl does not say whether or not she has tried carrying out her theory. It might be pointed out to her that if girls followed her protest, the world might reach a single standard of morals, but it would be a low one. Usually the "single standard” is taken to mean an effort to bring the men to a higher standard. Honest, Truly and Falfhful are receiving many answers to their questions about men’s true opinion of girls who flirt. Among them: For the Defense Dear Mia* Lee: This is in answer to the three Kiris who wanted to know about flirting. Why should girls be criticised for flirting. any more than men? The men say they laugh at Kiris who flirt, but it seems to me they ale no worse than the men themselves. I think it is time for the men to see girls hare a right to do the things men do. I am a girl 22 years old. I am In an office with men. expect no special favors in the office, and I don't see why girls should have special criticism either. MISS 1925. The Other Side Dear Miss Lee: I am a fellow 31 years old and 1 want to answer those girls who ask what we think of flir'ing. I never yet knew a fellow that had any respect for a girl who flirted, even if he took her out sometimes. It is bad enough for girls to flirt on the street. But girls who pick up rides in cars need to be spanked. They are lucky If they get off with being laughed at. OLD-TIMER. To 'Broken-Hearted Girl’ Dear Miss Lee: I want to say a few words to "A Broken-Hearted Little Girl." If your husband had not loved you he would not have married you. You say he treats you all right. Then what is the matter.' If he is doing the right thing, try to make the best of your bad bargain. Fight your battles yourself: don't take them to others. You say you let him make a fool of vou; then don't blame him alone for disgracing your parents. My mother died when I was a baby. I was always loved and petted" and told little of life. I me', a boy and we lost ourselves in our gr-at love. He cried like a

baby, because be really cared for me and we wanted to wait until I was through school before even considering marriage. Ho wanted to be married right away, but I told him to wait. We were married two months later. Yes. we had to pay. for when our baby came it was dead. Now we have another girl baby, and we are happy. Os course, we have our battles. and I fight them out. My people never know we ever quarrel. I am only 17 now and I do not pity myself, for It was ms much my fault as it was his. I think there would be more successful marriages and fewer divorces if the women would try to do their part and sacrifice more for their husbands, don’t you think so. Miss Lee* A HAPPY WIFE I am modern enough to think a mutual willingness to sacrifice would help. All the sacrificing’’ should not be left to the wife. But, of course, the chief burden of keeping the home happy still rests with the woman, and It is well for her to accept that’fact. Wants to Kill Love Dear Miss Lee: I am a girl in my teens, and am in love with my uncle, who is very much my senior. He loves me. also, as he has told me. Please tell me how to kill my love for him. as I do not want to break up his family. LITTLT MISS 90-BIG. It would do me good to see your uncle and tell him tvhat I think oC him. As I can not, I suppose I must he content with telling you to keep your mind busy with other things until you outgrow this unnatural infatuation. As 'Sheik' Sees It Dear Miss Lee: Some folks call me a sheik because I am 17 years old and wear my hair slicked back. But I guess some of the sheiks have more sense than folks think. I just want to tell those girls who asked about flirting that even the sheiks don’t think much of girls who flirt. I’ve flirted some myself, but I never did go with a girl I got to know through flirting very long. I figure that if she Is that kind of girl she would flirt with any one. TiiE SHEIK. Not Worth While Dear Miss Lee: I am a girl 19 years old. and I want to tell what I think, about flit ting. I never flirted in my life. I do not think it Is worth while. I would not want to go with men who would go with a girl because she flirted with them. And I am sure the men do not respect girls who will flirt with them. H. M. C.

LETTER FROM JOHN ALDEN PRESCOTT TO SYDNEY CARTON, CONTINUED Os course, you will understnd, Syd, that I will not allow my mother or • any other person to find the slightest fault with Leslie, and, althought I was very proud of her, I had that primitive Instinct that made rne want to go out on that dance floor and snatch her In my arms and carry her out of the radius of the admiring eyes of our friends. Yet I think I carried the whole thing off very well. I know, Syd, that I am very foolish to write or even think what I have been telling you about Leslie. She, God bless her, was doing nothing that was in the least Indiscreet. But, Syd, I must tell you that until that moment I really never knew

how much I loved her. All through our great tribulations, even when she placed my soju who was her son, in my arms, I did not know that she might be as provocative of love to some other man as she is to me. I learned that night that a man, even though he will not forego his fancied right to admire any woman whom he shall choose, denies that right emphatically to his wife. I had sometimes excused myself when I did some ‘‘damphoor’ act by saying that, although I loved Leslie better than any other woman on earth, I had to Introduce a little variety into my life. I reminded myself of the young boy who', when asked to write an essay on the domestic affairs of ancient Rome, said: “At that time, a man had only one wife. This was called moi\otony.” I found out at that party, Syd, that there was no danger of monotony with Leslie. She has had all the variations of femininity. Fool that I am, I did not recognize it before. When I married her, I thought of her only as a girl I loved, a gill who loved me. When the episode of Little Jack came up, I placed her among the saints almost too fine for the everyday man I knew myself to be. Later through the sorrow and pain of the deaths of her father anil sister, she became my ‘‘lady of sorrows,” and when I saw your godchild in her arms, I knew that in her gracious loveliness she typified the motherhood of the race. Then just as I had placed her on the pedestal devoted to the Madonnas qf the

world, she showed me an allure that I had never found before in another woman. “She is mine, she is mine,” I said to myself as the dry voice of my mother reproving her came to my ears. I had no thought but to protect my own. I strode toward Leslie and snatching her from all of them, 1 said: “Gome on. Let’s foxtrot.” (Copyright, 1925, NEA Service, Inc.)
