Mr. Fixit obtained treatment of a case of threatened blindness to a "silent cop" today. "The lamps in the ‘silent cop’ at Capitol Ave. and Maple Rd. are so dim you can’t tell whether you have the stop or go,” R. H. G. wrote. "Scores of motorists run past the signals every day, thinking they have the right-of-way." “I will send a man at once to investigate,” said Conrad Rorger, assistant electrical engineer of the board of safety. I Other mail: Dear Mr. Fixit: Is there no way to have Montcalm St. fixed? They patch up Indiana Ave. every spring up to Montcalm St. and then stop. Why? There is no worse street In the city than Montcalm. It could be patched and why not? A man broke a spring in his car driving down it last week. Please see if you can do anything for us. A Resident in the 1500 Block. Otto J. Smelcer, superintendent of paved streets, said the street eventually should be re laid with anew base. However, the department will repair the worst holes this week, ho promised. Indiana Ave. is always placed in good condition this time of the year In preparation for the Speedway visitors, who use it as a main thoroughfare to the races. Dear Mr. Fixit: The first alley east of Shelby St. between Calhoun St. and La Grande Ave. Is ina very bad condition especially at the Calhoun St. end, where there are deep rut holes left after passing Calhoun St. T would be very thankful if you would give this matter your attention. LETTER FROM JOHN ALDEN PRESCOTT TO SYDNEY CARTON. Don’t think, old man, that because I didn’t send you a telegram im-' mediately, I was not concerned with your abrupt departure from the party, but you see Leslie and I left for Pittsburgh the next day, and when I returned to the office I found my work piled up so high I could not see over It. You know me well enough to know that' I have a one-track mind. I have thought of nothing but steel and the steel business since I returned. Tonight, however, I am sitting in the officer waiting for a long-distance telephone call from New York, and while I am here I will write to you. What’s the matter, Syd? Why did you leave the party without a word to any one? I thought you were going to see us off on the train the next day. There was quite a delegation at the station. You probably saw the pictures of some of the women In the newspapers. There were as many cameras surrounding us as there were cannons at the tijne of the charging of the Light Brigade. Mother, who arrived at the party unexpectedly Just as was finishing that tango, has come home with us. At the train she said she "felt like one of those moving picture actresses and the sensation is nothing I desire.” She talked a lot about the disgraceful notoriety of it all, but I could see that she was much flattered as she basked in the warmth of Leslie's popularity. What did you think of Leslie's dancing? I confess I was greatly surprised—and a little apprehensive. You know, Syd, dancing is not my strong point. Some way I never expected Leslie to excel In such social activities either. Quer, isn't it. that a man Is never quite happy when he sees his wife, the center of interest and admiration among his friends, if he does not share It with her. I don’t Just know that t can describe the mixed feelings that were mine when I saw my wife going through the sensuous measures with Melville Sartoris. There was one

emotion, however, of which I was perfectly oonscious. I hated the good-looking devil who was dancing with her with a hatred which made me wan. to walk out upon that floor, snatch my wife from his, arms and knock him into simthereens. Os course, you can see how silly that was of me, Syd. I myself saw this only a few minutes afterward when I heard my mother, who had arrived on the scene most unexpectedly, making caustic remarks of disapproval of Resile for 'making suCh an exhibition of herself.” I didn’t know that could dance the tango, but I found oyt later that knowing she was to have this uarty and thinking her dancing was a little rusty, she had been taking daily lessons for the last two weeks, both in Atlantic City and Albany. To flirt or not to flirt, that is the question. Three girls, 18, 19 and 20, asked what men really think of girls who flirt. Their answers began coming in today, and they came from girls as well as men.
A few years ago, even to ask such a question woud have been unheardof. But now, it seems, things are somewhat different. These girls see others who do not worry about the formality of an introduction, and they wonder what the men think of such girls, since they do not always expose them to scorn. One man answers: “Don’t think, just because some girls seem to get away with flirting, that the fellows respect them. They laugh at them among themselves.” That seems to be the tenor of the answers thus far. Further developments are awaited. Men Laugh Dear Mis* Lee: I want to answer those three srlrls that want to know about flirting:. lam a man 27 years old and I have boon around a hit and have *een all kinds of fellows and girls. Don't you ever think. Just because some girls seem to get away with flirting, that the fellows respect them. They laugh at them amour themselves. They go with these rtrlg. but they would not-marry them on a bet. I ruses some of the rirls are all right. Just out for a rood time, but they sure spoil their chances with the fellows. WISEACRE. Thinks of Sisters Dear Martha Lee: Honest. Truly and KA’thful have the wronr idea if they think men like girls who flirt. I have three sisters and I would hate to think they felt that way about It. because I know no decent man has any respect for a girl who would flirt with him. even If ho flirts back. BROTHER BILL. Left Waiting Dear Martha Lee: 1. I have been going with a boy for some time. I have gone with him before, but left town and when I came back we were going together again. One night he left and we had not quarreled, but ne has never come back or called. When he sees me coming down the street he hides from me. He gave me to understand he wanted to go with me "steady." but he changed his mind very
