DRUG STORE IS LATEST BAR IN LINE FOR RAID Patent Medicines Containing Alcohol Being Sold in Large Quantify. Bu Timet Special WASHINGTON, May 16.—Drug stores In Washington and those of many other cities are cutting Into the business of the hlp-pocket bootlegger by selling. over the counter thinly disguised urines and "tonics.” Some of these preparations, officers of the prohibition unit say, are questionable and an Investigation of them Is probable. If any are found to violate the law, prosecutions will follow. A typical stock of these preparations for thirsty Invalids Is found on the shelves of a drug store within one block of the Treasury Department and the White House. One Is a "malt tonic/’ which, according to the oarton, Is "based on the old reliable formula of malt and hops." Also there Is "old—tonic,” which ' brings back for and memories to many steady customers. It lb “a truly stimulative and blood building medicinal preparation containing nutritive properties combined In a rare old wine of knowr tonic value.” It boasts of 18 per cent alcohol and a sixteen-ounce bottle costs, ?1.60. For Cooking Only '* Then for the little wife who has difficulty in cooking by the Volstead act, the druggist has sherry wine "seasoning." It Is made of “The highest grade of pure California wine containing the usual amount of salt used in seasoning.” It contains 20 per cent alcohol. Lest any ignorant person shohld mistake the use to which this preparation is to be put, the box plainly says “For Cooking Purposes.” Now there are some people who just don’t like the taste of medicine. For such there Is to be had a specially prepared tonic, also containing 20 per cent alcohol, which Is, so the package says, "A Pleasant, Strengthening, Appietiaing, structive and Wine-like Food Tonio.” Thus by going through the stock of a dozen brands —all containing about 20 per cent alcohol—a medicinal bar decidedly reminiscent of the days of yore can be organized at reasonable cost. The druggists say that considerable quantities are sold to negroes and poor customers. They find the compounds as cheap—if not cheaper, far more safe, and of greater potency than the stuff peddled by the drink in the alleys by hip-pocket bootleggers, gome have a medicated taste,' but few are downright unpalatable. 1 Hard to Check Prohibition unit officials raid that field agents were supposed to report all such preparations to headquarters for analysis, but that so many new compounds were being put out, that it was difficult to keep up this check. Labels are changed'frequently and new trade names substituted. Some preparations probably do not come strictly within the law. Others are

entirely legal, but are sold under misleading advertlsihg so phrased as to make the customer think he Is getting wine or whisky which has not been medicated to any noticeable extent. Many of these preparations, one prohibition official said, taste like straight wine at first, but that when taken in quantity would quickly produce nausea and are therefore classed as non-potable preparations. may be reached under the food and drug act, which is administrated by the Department of Agriculture, but the prohibition officials said they paid little attention to this, as they were kept busy with their own work. Section 17 of the Volstead act prohibits the advertising of intoxicants, but few been taken Into court under this provision, as most of that activity falls under the food and drug act, whloh Imposes severe penalties for misleading labels.
