BRITISH LIQUOR MAGNATE’S RUM IS CONFISCATED \ Aristocratic Cargo Fails Into Hands of Guardsmen During Raid. Bu United Pres NEiv7 LONDON, Conn., May IB.— Five hundred cases of rare old whisky and liquors with each bottle neatly e.utographed "by Sir Brotherlck Hartwell” are in the custody of customs officials here —the booty of a recent coast guard raid on the baronet’s boats off the New England coast. The coast guard never has bragged of its part in sticking the pin In Sir Broderick’s rum bubble and putting the Britisher in bankruptcy. Bui the evidence is here. More of Sir Broderick’s liquor is said to be stored at other coast guard bases. The whisky is principally of a special brand called "gold seal," manufactured "especially for Sir Broderick Hartwell.” "It’s good stuff,” said a customs guard as ho non-chalantly smashed a bottle on an iron stanchion for the edification of spectators. The sang frotd with which coakt guardsmenand customs employes toss cases of liquor from boat to boat and smash it under the noses of thirsty spectators is not least of the sights of this port. Yet, officials of both services say their men handle the liquor without the slightest attempt to take it for their own use. There is great excitement here today concerning warfare in Rum Row. The rum fleet is reported moving eastward in front of the ‘starvation” blockade off New York. Wartime secrecy has been entered upon and pickets guard entrances to harbor entrances. \ STATE MEETING HELD Daughters of America Gather at Bright wood Hall. Twenty-two lodges were represented at a State meeting of Daughters of America today at Brightwood Hall, 2341% Station St. Reports of committees were given. Degree team captained by Mrs. Marie Hoffman will confer work on twenty-two candidates. Daughters of America is an auxiliary organization of United American Machinists. UP TO SHIPPING BOARD Ford Makes It Clear Government Must Propose Price. Bv United Free* DETROIT, Mich., May 15.—Henry Ford feels that the next move in the negotiations whereby he might purchase 400 steel hips from the United States Shipping Board is up to the board, it was revealed today. The impression given out at Ford’s Dearborn offices was that no offer for the lleet had been made—that the Shipping Board was to state what it wanted for the ships.
