SICKNESS GOES FROM CITY AS NEAT ROLLS IN Health Officer Says the Mortality Rate Is Low in Summer. With the arrival of warm weather, Indianapolis Is entering the cycle of good health months, in which sickness and mortality rates are at their lowest point, according to Dr. Her man G. Morgan, city health officer. Those of us who have survived the month of March have the odds with us to remain on the planet for many more mopths, Dr. Morgan said. It Is in that month that man’s resistance to disease germs is at the lowest ebb, he said. Get Outdoors Warm weather brings people outdoors, where they breathe fresh air and cultivate resistance to sickness. The sun's rays also stimulate health and add to the general feeling of well-being. Contrary to popular belief that associates the mpnth .of August with suffocating heat and dogdays, Dr. Morgan says that the torrid per iod is the healthiest in the year. While diphtheria cases oftentimes develop in August there are fewer deaths and instances of illness reported than in any other month. Development of sports, drawing persons to the golf links, tennis courts and swimming pools, has built up the system to a point where germs are eliminated. Down in Autumn With the opennlg of the schools in September, the health cycle starts its swing downward. Colds begin to appear in October, followed by pneumonia in the winter months. Then comes scarlet fever, which reaches its peak in the spring months, along with tuberculosis. April and May are the measles months. The army of health is now concentrating its barrage upon the winter diseases. Dr. Morgan said. Development of sanitation, sewage disposal, purification of the milk supply and other health measures have reduced summer illnesses to a minimum. Sponges Off Alaska? SEATTLE, Wash.—Sponges found on the anchor of a ship off Chichagoff, Alaska, may cause the discovery of large sponge fields in that vicinity. The water at 20 fathoms was found to be 18 degrees warmer than at the surface, or warm enough for sponges to grow. World’s Deepest Well LATRjOBE, Pa. —The deepest well in the 'world has been completed here. Engineers drilled down a depth of 7428 feet before they struck riatural gas. The drilling required 0 months.

‘FURNITURE 300 PER CENT ABOVE PRE-WAR PRICE' Government Out to Find Evidence of Illegal Combinations. flu 1 nit erf l're*n CHICAGO, May 14.—Honeymoon era, it seems, would do well to honeymoon a bit longer, waiting to feather their nest until the Government has completed its investigation of the furniture industry. In response to many complaints that there is a “trust" in the furniture manufacturing business, the wheels of the department of Justice are grinding away in spacious quarters here, seeking to find grounds for the complaints. Roger T. Shale, assistant attorney general, with a reputation for “trust busting," is in charge of a large staff sent here from Washington to conduct the investigation. He has scores of assistants and other scores of stenographers in work at a suite at the Federal building. Shale has ordered more than 250

furniture manufacturers in the middlewest to submit their books for examination. Only a few of them so far have arrived and they are being scrutinized closely by Shale and his aids. A month may be required to complete this work. No Results Yet “The investigation is too young to report any early results," Shale said today as more books and records were dumped in his office. It is the Government's belief that furniture prices are exhorbltant, that they are 300 per cent higher than pre-war levels. If a "trust” is discovered, furniture prices may be reduced sharply. The case may go to Federal grand jury If sufficient evidence Is obtained. Representatives of one of Chicago's largest furniture house told the United Press today It would cost a young married couple approximately $1,300 to furnish a "fourroom love nest.” If prices are 300 per cent higher than before the war the same furniture might have been purchased in 1914 for about $325. At present prices, here's what it would cost to furnish a four-room model cottage, as outlined by the United Press informant: Tlip Bad News Living Room—Parlor set of three pieces. $250: wall desk, $36.50; book trough, $21.95; Coxwell chair, $35.50; lamp shade, $12.75; rug. $115; total, $475.70.
