DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURE STYLES SEEN HERE
Gothic, Tudor, Tuscan and Many Others Give Varied ) Appearance to Indianapolis Residences —Tarkington Writes of Trend. By Molly Elliott “The Goth, the Tudor and the Tuscan had harried the upper reaches to a turmoil, attaining its climax in a howl or two from the Spanish Moor,” wrote Booth Tarkington in “The Flirt,’’ when he sought to convey some idea of the architectural growth of an Indianapolis street. And anyone who has studied the architectural styles now to be seen along almost any residence street, particularly Meridian, Washington Blvd. and other streets of similar type, will recognize all of these influences and more. For at the time Mr. Tarklngton wrote "The Flirt” the revival of tho Dutch colonial and the New England colonial had not yet reached Indianapolis in full force. Boi h are here now, along with the gothic the tudor or Elizabethlan, the Italian renaissance and the Spanish mission, so called, and it remains for the home builder to decide which. If any, architectural influence he v-fill allow to govern his future home. Consult Architect All havo their merits; It Is entirely a matter of taste. But It is well to consider each and consult a reliable architect regarding the chosen one before work on the house begins. The gothic influence is seen In residences in a modified form, for it wag originally a style best suited to churches and cathedrals. The finest examples of it may be found In these ecclesiastical structures, hut the gothic arch, the steep walls with close-cut eaves, the high-pitched roof and the deep-set casement windows may still be seen in modern architecture adapted from this type. The tudor and Elizabethlan styles, frequently classed as “the English type houses,” are so closely related to this earlier form that they show many of the same features, and for convenience any residence of this type may be so described. In the English house, as seen in Indianapolis, the exterior, walls are usually of dark shades of tapestry brick or of brick and stucco in the "half-timbered” effect. Occasionally all stucco is used, but this is tho exception rather than the rule. With the dark brick walls, trimming of Bedford limestone is very effective, and in one excellently designed home on Washington Blvd., the limestone Jiaa been used to edge a parapet lopping the walls, giving the real old-world atmosphere. The Gothic arch is seen here above the entrance doors, which are outlined in stone, and above the porte-cochere, and In the interior of the house this pointed arch is seen wherever an archway is used. Diamond Panes Casement windows set In metal frames, with the glass marked off in diamond shaples has been selected for this artistic residence, as the dia-inond-paned casement was characteristic of the Tudor dwelling, and the Interior of this house has walls panailed in dark oak, a great oak staircase and floors of black and white marble 'n the spacious entrance hall. The ' half-timbered” English house Is usually less formal in character but th© Gothic arch and casement window are still featured and paneled walls are used whenever a dark wall Is preferred. If the walls are canvassed, the panel effect may still be used, but the coloring is lighter and the room more modern In Its atmosphere. The floors in the English type house are usually of dark, highly polished oak with marble-floored entrance halls, and a great fireplace, frequently of quaintly ornamented cream-toned terracotta, Is a feature oft he living room. ' There ere. of course, smallter and less costly houses of the English type.
