DE CROES SHOP PLACE TO GET FRENCH FOODS Two Lunchrooms Have High Standard of Culinary Excellence. “Animals feed, man eats,” Is a popular saying in France, for no nation of the world has such a high regard for well prepared and daintily served food. Katlng, in France, is a ceremony—the cook haa the pride of an artist in the dishes he prepares, and French cooking has established itself as a standard of culinary excellence. It is not necessary to go to France, however, to enjoy food cooked, seasoned and served as it is in the land of epicures. Here in Indianapolis there are two delightful French restaurants. Ue Croes Pastry Shop and Lunch Room No, 1 at 215 217 E. Ohio St., and No. 2 at 427 Massachusetts Ave. Near City Mali The lie Croes lunch room on Ohio St. is just across from the city hall, and has been a favorite .eating place of worl ers in that neighborhood ever since it opened. From a single room it grew until two large room<3 aie filled with customers every noon. The second lunch room, at 427 Massachusetts Ave., the first block south of the Murat Theater, was opened recently to care for the overflow and for those customers whose work is in this part of the city. However, there are many wise folks who willingly walk . long distance for a De Croes meal. Three Menus For lunch one ‘may choose from three menus, that offer a choice of meats, vegetables, salads and drinks. A typical one is roast pork with mashed potatoes and brown gravy, string beans, crisp slaw, fresh hot home-made rolls and coffee. In addition, one may order from a wide variety of pies, all of them home-made, with all the flaky deliciousness that every home-made pie should possess. The servings are generous, the service prompt and the food deliciously prepared. The pleasant surprise Is that the bill so.- all of this lunch, including pie, is Just 40 cents. Meats to order, served with hot biscuits, French fried potatoes and a drink may be had for equally moderate prices, and breakfast is served to order at any hour from 6 a. n. until noon.

Maennerchor In Fine Form
Closely identified with worth-while musical activity in this city is the Indianapolis Maennerchor. This large group of men singers, by careful work under the direction of Karl lteckzeh, has developed Into a commanding choral organization. This singing group has the services of experineced male voices. In addition to the beautiful tone produced as a part of the melody fabric, there is a general enthus'as'n present which gives the entire idea new life. That is the astonishing thing to me—that these men seem to have fresh interest in song at every recital. There Is joy in ehoral singing and these men have it iti large quantities. Hast night after leaving the annual spring concert of the Maennerchor at the Academy of Music, I had the feeling that I had experienced a real evening in song. All of the Maennerchor numbers were in German. has developed a well-rounded singing corps of men. The men have the voices but the director has blended them into as near perfect an ensemble as one dares to expect. Os the Maennerchor numbers I enjoyed most "Dem Rheim Mein Lied” and ‘‘De Frehllng.” one of those haunting, moving melodies, having at times a pipe organ effect. The guest soloist was Mine. Helen Stanley, a soprano. Understand that this is her first visit here. Here first two groups were in German and the last In English. She belongs to what I consider the dramatic type of a singer. She expresses with ease the drama of song as well as the lighter moods. In the higher register her voice is dear and true. In Schuman's “Stille Thraenen,” she gave proof of the rich, marvelous and flexible quality of her voice. There is joy in work brought about by much experience in song. She knows the technical side of the business. She has a rich and beautiful voice, but above all she knows
