‘SUBURBS MUST MAKE WAY FOR BIGGERCHICAGO’ Sociologist Points to Inevitable Absorption by Giant City. Bu United Frees EVANSTON, 111, May B.—Despite the objections of suburban citizens, the suburba bounding Chicago will soon be federated Into a solid mass with the mlddlewestern metropolis, said Prof. William Bailey, Northwestern University sociologist and specialist In population movements. The borough systems of London and Nerw York city are apt to be the solution to the problem, Prof. Bailey stated. Evanston, Oak Park, Wilmette, Niles Center, may be consolidated into Chicago as were all the suburbs of Berlin, when the German capital completely annexed all of its suburbs. Prof. Bailey admits that the annexation is not likely to be popular with suburban dwellers, and deplores the supercilious attitude of the commuter toward the city. ‘'These towns, and especially Evaanston, must realize that they are located In the path of the city, that they cannot hope to block progress of an lrresistable force. Bossies Contesting for First Place .'tv Times Special GENEVA, May B.—Alpine ■ows In the Canton of Valois f.re having their annual fights, o determine which shall lead the herd until nest spring. The successful cow In each herd will carry a bell around her neck as the symbol of leadership. Next year the "queen” will have u> fight two or three selected young cows to retain her title. The custom Is observed with picnics, at which the Alpine villagers watch the fights. The cows are not injured, as the fights are merely exhibitions of strength.

is Inevitable that the people must give up home residential districts, and that they will become a district of apartments and apartment hotels. "Evanston should not grieve at giving up the title of ‘college town* but should rather have pride In beink known as a ‘university city’ he said. "This would be the cultural center for libraries, publishing, museums and galleries all centering around Northwestern University. "Such a place would provide for a greater Chicago; the towns taken in might retain a certain amount of self-government; they might tax themselves, but they can not ttay progress by smug self satisfaction.”
