LOCATION OF HOME IS IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION

Best Possible Site Should Be Chosen —Transportation Is Also Factor Not to Be Overlooked in Making Selection. By Molly Elliott Way hack In prehistoric days our cave-dwelling ancestors had only to look about until they found a spacious den among the rocks, hang up a lion skin curtain at the door, put down the ( mastedon-hide rug and settle down to housekeeping. In this modern age, however, house hunting, particularly when the house is to be a permanent home, is a business to be undertaken with thougnt and care, and, since caves cannot be found and dwellings must be built, the first thing to consider Is the site. That wasn’t such an important matter with the cave man, though, of course, a dwelling near the water might have been favored by the lady of the cave, especially w r hen drinking water had to be carried in. Money Question First, of course, comes the question of the amount of money that may be spent for the home. The best, possible location that you can afford should be purchased. It is well to save on the house rather than on the lot. For a lot In a poor location will cause the of the house to deteriorate; better a $3,000 house on a $2,000 lot than a house costing $4,500 on a lot that cost only SSOO. For while the latter house may be the best in the neighborhood it will be a poor neighborhood, and environment counts a great deal If ,-hiidren are to grow up In it. Accordingly, one should try to buy either in a neighborhood where most of the houses are already built, so that it is possible to judge of its ultimate character, or in anew addition upon which there are proper restrictions. In this way, the new home will he in keeping with its surroundings and will seem neither a small frog in a large puddle or a large frog in a raudhole. Transportation Important Transportation should also he taken into consideration in selecting a site, and an effort made to buy within easy walking distance of a carline or bus line, for while the home owner will probably own an automobile also, the laundress or cook must come and go on the street car or bus, and would come more regularly If one were near. A school, too, should be within walking distance of a city location, otherwise it becomes a problem to get the children to school. If the property is In an unimproved neighborhood, It would be wise Indeed to learn the cost of whatever improvements are to be made before investing. as the improvements may cost much more than one anticipates. Whether the lot should be high nr low, north, south, east or west front is a matter of personal taste, nut trees are always an addition to a. lot and Increase its value especially if they are well located. It s advisable to figure whether they ire so placed that they need not be •ut down to make room for the house. An architect or experienced •milder can tell at a. glance whether a wooded lot allows room for the house and drive ay without a sacrifice of any fine trees, and for this reason the architect or builder should he consulted at an early stage In the home-hunting game.
