AMNESIA EXPLAINED BY HOSPITAL HEAD Dr. Max Bahr Says Mind May Resort to Loss of Memory to Wipe Out Thoughts.

Just as a man may plunge into a debauchery of alcholism or worldly pleasure to forget something painful, so the mind sometimes of its own volition resorts to loss of memory to wipe out certain thoughts. That is how Dr. Max Bahr, superintendent of the Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane, explained amnesia, or loss of memory, today. Sometimes amnesia victims are

Could you spend a few cents a week to better advantage? Could you buy anything for the difference in price between Coffee and cheaper brands that would give your family as much pleasure as the never-changing smoothness, strength anand flavor of increase in the cost of green coffees, there has been no change in -yp quality, and the change in price has been much less than our production cost would justify. brought to the attention of the public, to puzzle the lawman mind. Such a case is that of Ward Hughes, of Chicago, who has been at the city hospital since he awakened at 5 a. m. Tuesday at the Union Station. Although he has been positively identified, Hughes has no recognition of his narqe or remembrance of anything in his life previous to Tuesday’s experiences. Dr. Bahr compared cases of

amnesia and dual personality. “Both are due to dissociation of the mind, a splitting of consciousness,” he said. “In dual personality, it is as if two subjects were run on the same movie screen, one above the other; in amnesia, as if one subject were run, and then the other. “The basic feature is a mental conflict between certain desires, including the primitive instincts, and the so-called herd Instincts, representing the lives all of us follow because of rules of society. The primitive Instincts demand recognition. • “The victim crowds out of his consciousness, but not out of his mind, things he wants to forget. That is why he still acts intelligently and does not forget his knowledge or education. “Shock, would not bring on amnesia in a norm il mind. It Is nature's defense against mental pain. “Sometimes amnesia lasts only a few minutes, or a few hours. At other times. It lasts months. The mind may readjust itself.” TWO LOSE ON APPEAL Judge Collins Hears I.iquor Cases In Criminal Court.
