Stephenson Goes to Church Now Jail Routine Calls for Attendance at Sunday Services.

Among other routine functions required of Jail prisoners, D. C. Stephenson, ex-Klan leader now held on murder charges, has to go to church each Sunday morning with all the other 250 prisoners. Stephenson takes It as a matter of course, according to deputy sheriffs. Most of the prisoners like to attend the church services each Sunday morning In the main dining room of the jail, the deputies say. Breaks Monotony It breaks the monotony of Jail life. In Marlon county, there Is no workhouse, and prisoners, except those detailed to odd jobs around the Jail, find time hangs exceedingly heavy on their hands. “The sky-pilots who appeal to these boys are the birds who step on the ‘mother’ stuff,” said sheriff of man yyears expedience. “They get over better than these austere parsons who pull that old cut and dried stuff about reform, or who try to threaten the lads with hell fire. “There’s not many of all the pilots who have spoken here who get across very well. But there are two or three. E. S. Shumaker, head of the Anti-Saloon League, and F. Howard Cadle, are two of the best I ever saw when it comes to touching a prisoner’s heart. Makes Thrm Cry “Those two gentlemen can sure make some of them break down and cry. “Then there was another sky pilot whose name I forget, who used to pull that old sob stuff until It nearly got ’em all down. Painted a picture about the little lane winding back to the little old home, with the little old mother, all old and gray, waiting for you there, and all that stuff. You know! “Say, I klnda like to hear It myself.” ESSAY PRIZES OFFERED Will Be Part of Observance of Ice Cream Week. quirer on telephone at Mayor Lhank's office made Capt. Roy A. Pope, Shank’s personal aid, smile. “Why, no madam,” he replied. ‘Well, they’ve been bothering me to death and when T wouldn't tell them how I was going to vote, they said they’d put me down as a Socialist.
