ITALIAN BULLDOG IN WALL STREET FLING Spank on the Head With Black-Jack Reminds Canine District Is for “Bulls and Bears" Only.
Hv Timm Special NEW YORK. May I.—A large Italian bulldog, a rum-hound as the police identified him later, ambled down broad street, one of the main arteries of America's heart of gold, Thursday afternoon and the doughty financiers of the district who quail not before bulls a.nd bears, were frightened Into a Btampeda. The Intentions of the dog may have been friendly but his face was all against them if they were, so he was finally surrounded by a hurryup detail of police, spanked over the skull with a black, jack, lassoed, tossed into a street-cleaners’ wagon and hauled away to the canine psychopathic ward maintained by the 8. P. C. A., where dogs are kept under observation as to their sanity or madness. It was Broad St’s worst acare since the bomb went off at the corner of Rroad and Wall. And now that the dog has !>een locked away, 'he people who ran from him won der if he wasn't just out for an afternoon frolic, after all. tributed among 60,552 individuals, show species, hut the policemen who mobbed the animal in Broad St. say it's a dangerous and well defined breed just the same. Bootleggers favor the Italian bull, they say, be cause It stands about 2feet high, weighs about 150 pounds, has the shoulders of a Polish wrestler and the disposition of a saddle-sore mus trfng. Detailed to guard a cache of liquor, the rum-hound breed of Julius Caesar's homeland would fight the United States Marines to the very death. The wanderer In Broad St. was first noticed by the outer fringe of a circle listening to an open air evangelist. “Oh, ye of little faith, the preacher was snouting when the Italian bulldog appeared, but the les son of the text was lost in this crisis. The congregation dispersed into the nearby hallways, some of the members rushing right through the guarded portals of J. P. Morgan's office, where half a dozen private detectives always stand guard. When the dog veered down the stairs into the exchange uffet the clientele felt a sudden urge to refum to work and In two minutes a lone, bewildered woof was In sole posses sion of the Exchange buffet. About this time the reserves ar lived from Did Slip Station. There was a skirmish in the restaurant. The dog ran to the street. The pa trolmen closed.in with lariats. With the first few tosses they lassoed one another. Then one of them acci dentally snared the rum-hound. A quick slap on the cranium with a blackjack settled the situation ?nd the financiers of Bread St. went back to their bulls and bears. STUNT DAY AT BUTLER Delegation to Attend Y. W. C. A.
