GARY MEN TO START TERMS Mayor and Four Others Will Leave Today. Roswell O. Johnson, former mayor of Gary, Ind., and four other Gary persons convicted of dry law violations, surrendered to United States Marshal Linus P. Meredith today and were to leave\ Indianapolis at 3:20 for Atlanta, Ga., where they will begin prison sentences. The five were among: fifty-five convicted. Besides Johnson were Lewis E. Barnes, former president of board of works: Clyde Hunter, and Dwight Kinder, former Lake County prosecutors, and Blass Lucas, an attorney. Johnson’s sentence is eighteen months and his tine $2,000. The other four got a year and a day and fines of SI,OOO. Twenty-six other Gary persons are to report to Meredith before Monday to begin jail sentences. The men to go to Atlanta arranged ir> have a drawing room in a pullman car. Part of the expenses will he borne by prisoners. Peru Road Closed State highway officials today announced temporary closing of State load Non - at a point seven miles north of Kokomo while a bridge is being refloored. A four-mile detour has been established to accommodate tourists, it was announced. The job of patroling one of the roughest districts in the city In wee smaJl hours, lies on the shoulders of Patrolman Henry Dugan. District 38, which he patrols from 7 p. m. until 3 a. m, takes in territory, bounded by St. Clair and New York Sts., Illinois and Missouri Sts. In this toritory. lies what is familarily known as the levee, along Illinois St. It also includes the well-known colored ‘'Broadway," better known as Indiana Ave. A large rooming house district Is on this beat, and a close watch must he maintained to cope with the influx of resort keepers. The arrests record show's that Dugan keeps these well in hand. Dugan lives at 2171 Station St., and was appointed in September, 1916.

MAY JUNK CAR LINE Receiver for Beech Grove Company Before Tax Board. If the Beech Grove Traction line can not be sold within a reasonable time It will be junked, was he substance of a statement made before the State tax board by Donald Morris, representing the Fletcher Sav- ■ ings and Trust Company, receivers for the line. The tax board fixed 1925 valuation of the property, for taxation purposes at $35,000. Taxation valuations of the Indianapolis Street Railway Company, ( and the Terre Haute, Indianapolis and Eastern Traction Company, were to be fixed this afternoon. LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL All Ecept in Center Tow nsliip to End Friday. Lee E. Swails, county school superintendent, announced today that all of the township schools, except Center Township, will end this week fro summer vacation. Schools in Center Township will continue another mOnth. David M. Hogg of Ft. Wayne. Ind., will l>e principal speaker at commencement of Wayne township high and grade schools at Bridgeport tonight. Thirty-three high school and 113 grade school student* will be given diplomas. MUSIC AT SHORTRIDGE Program Will Be Prelude for National Week. Shortridge musical organizations v ill give a program at the next meeting of the Shortridge ParentTeacher Association, May 29, at 8:15 in Caleb Mills Hall as a prelude to observance of National Music week in Indianapolis. The Shortridge Orchestra and Girls’ Club are under the direction of Claude E. Palmer and Lyndon Street has charge of the band and Boys’ Glee Club.

MINERS’ STRIKE I LANDS IN COURT Controversy Arises Over Injunction Granted Operators. Bu United Preu* WHEELING. W. Va.. April 28. Court proceedings were started in United States District Court here to day by West Virginia operators against the mine union now on strike. The struggle is over the validity of an injunction, issued two years ag;o, which prohibits interference with*operation of the West VirginiaPittsburgh Coal Company. John L. president of the Mine Workers, and other union officials have been charged by the operators with contempt of court for alleged violation of the injunction. Coffin, Republican county chairman, had failed to answer a letter requesting representation for all Republican candidates for mayor on primary election board were made Monday by Samuel D. Speaking *at meeting in Fire Station 16, Sixteenth St. and Ashland Ave., Miler said he had forwarded letter special delivery April 19 and that he had to date received no reply. THREE DRIVERS SLATED Two Arrested for Alleged Reeponsibility ior Accidents. Three motorists were arrested by i police today. J. W. Hodges, 32. of 2365 Southeastern Ave., was charged with failure to .stop after an accident. Hearing on an amended complaint that the State does not state facts sufficient to claim the right of domaine in diverting State Rd. 37 around Pendleton, will l>e held Saturday morning. Circuit Judge Kissinger announced today after ruling on objections today filed by Fall Creek township farmers who are opposing the new route. Judge Kisninger overruled the farmers’ objections that the state did not have a right of domaine, nor authority to change the route. Objections that the State hadn’t described any part of the highway and that the road had never been called a main highway were sustained. New Labor Bank Director John L. Lewis, president Union Labor Bank, today announced J. VV. Hays, secretary-treasurer Jnterna tional Typographical Union, had h>een made a director of the bank.
