EARTHQUAKE IS FELT; DAMAGE REFORT SMALL Tremor Visits Several States —City Buildings Are Rocked. Little damage waa reported in Indianapolis and the State from the earthquake which, about 10:06 Sunday night, was felt throughout southern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. While police headquarters was besieged with calls following the tremors which lasted several seconds, those who telephoned were Inquiring the cause of the disturbance and did not report damages. Many Unaware Although windows were rattled, buildings rocked and some furniture moved, many Indianapolis people were not aware that there had been an earthquake until so informed today. Main force seemed to he felt by north and eastern parts of the city. Effect of earthquake was described as a rumbling and rocking, such as usually accompanies heavy thunder and powerful windstorm by many of those who called police headquarters. Dispatches from St. Louise state the seismograph at St. University recorded center of shock at about 100 to 150 rnilet southeast of the city, which would place it somewhere in Kentucky. Three quakes were felt there between 10:06 and 10:30 p. m. First two tremors lasted six seconds, while the third was of thirty seconds’ duration. Word From Evansville Word received from Evansville bears out evidence recorded by seismograph, for crowds fled, panicstricken, from theaters, while crockery and dishes were reported broken. In tornado-stricken Princeton, two chimneys were tumbled down. No damage resulted from shocks at Springfield, 111., according to dispatches, which stated three distinct tremors were felt. Slipping of rock strata, along vertical fractures or joints \va,s the. probable cause of the quake, according to Professor (Henry Lane Bruner of the department of geology at Butler University. Bruner said the disturbance probably was connected with the recent earthquake in eastern Canada. Hot weather may have been a secondary cause, he said.
