SPIRITS CAN’T BREAK WILL, JUDGE RULES Physician Retrieves Property He Gave to Medium on ‘Orders’ From Clara Barton.
WASHINGTON, April 23.—Messages from the “spirit world’’ were wiped out recently In the drab reall y of the courtroom. Asa result, much valuable property left by Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, is to be return and to Julian B. Hubbell, 70 years old, after a five years' legal battle. This property, whloh Is at Glen Echo, Md., just north of Washington, was left by Miss Barton to Dr. Hubbell, who was her physician and secretary for many years. Dr. Hubbell asserted he turned the land over to Mrs. Mabelle Rawson Hlron In response to a ‘spirit message” she said she had received from Miss Barton. According to the attorneys for Dr. Hubbell, Mrs. Hlron came to Washington in 1914 after the death of Miss Barton, and represented herself to be wealthy, the owner of property in Philadelphia, Mexico and the W est. It was alleged she professed to be Interested In the establishmert of a Clara Barton memorial on the site of the founder’s old home in Glen Echo. Dr. Hubbell invited Mrs. Hlron to occupy a part of the large frame dwelling less by Miss Barton. Mrs.

Hlron thereupon made that her home, and Dr. Hubbell continued to occupy it. In 1920, despite the fact they still lived under the same roof, and do now, Dr. Hubbell brought a suit against Mrs. Hlron to recover the property. The names of such prominent persons as Miss Barton and John T. Clark, son of the late Senator Clark of Montana, multimillionaire, as well as ghosts, mediums and spirtual messages, were brought into the litigation. Dr. Hubbell alleged Mrs. Hiron had said she could obtain unlimited assistance for the Clara Barton memorial from her rich friends. Soon after Mrs. Hiron went to live at Glen Echo, so the court was told, she professed to be Interested in spiritualism, a subject that had engrossed Dr. Hubbell for years. It was asserted, although Mrs. Hiron has denied she was a spiritualist, that both attended seances in Washington. There the alleged messages from Miss Barton were received. A short time later, so attorneys for Dr. Hubbell contended, Mrs. Hiron told Dr Hubbell she was a medium and could go into a trance and communicate with the dead. Numerous times, so he said, Mrs.
