Spring Fever Now Grips City
Health Officials Say There Is No Cure for Malady.
While Indianapolis struggles in the grip of a malady so widespread as to assume epidemic proportions, health officials calmly sit back in their chairs and refuse to take measures for the relief of the public. “But the public does not want relief,” insisted Dr. Herman G. Morgan, secretary of the city board of health. “As for prevention—none has been invented.” The malady? Spring fever, of course. Scientifically speaking, there “ain’t no such thing.” But, though doctors may not recognize it officially, they do not deny its exist- j ence. Dr. Morgan described spring fever I as “a symptom characterized by malaise and a feeling of languidness that comes with the advent of ! spring.” “It is defined by some as laziness,” he said. “By others, it is seen as the result of being on a so-called I winter diet in ■which leafy vegetables I and spring tonic foods are absent." Nc, by spring tonic foods he did .not mean sulphur and molasses or sassafras tea. “The ‘disease,’ ” the doctor continued, “is characterized by a desire to eat greens, lettuce, asparagus and —young onions. It is a pleasant affliction, bringing with it a feeling of well-being.” Even if he knew of any preventive measures, Dr. Morgan was not at all sure he would make them public. "I don’t know but-what it would be wrong to advocate any prevention,” he said. “It’s one epidemic | it is a good thing to have.”

“But there is a cure—oh, yes, the pleasantest cure imaginable. The cure is to do just what spring fever makes you want to do—get outside, play golf or go fishing.” Now why should any one want to prevent an epidemic like that? If you insist upon a medical rx-

plandtion of spring fever, Dr. Morgan gives it as “an adjustment of the system to changes in the humidity and temperature.” Other doctors agreed with Dr. Morgan that the “epidemic” need not cause alarm, and that the cure is outdoor sport and exercise.
