STREET CAR PROBLEM STRIKES BEECH GROVE
proposal to Install Busses in Place of Old Line as Connection Between Town ( and Indianapolis Starts Argument. Beech Grove is a city of controversy. About the postoffice, fire station and other centers of community a battle of words is raging over the proposal to supplant the time-honored, though somewhat shop-worn Beech Grove Traction Company, connecting the town to Indianapolis, with line of automobile busses. The question also Involved proposal to annex Beech Grove to Indianapolis, for many friends of the traction company say they will favor an annexation campaign in retaliation fcr support they declare members of the town board have promised to bus lines. “What will the neighbors say?’’ a question raised in all stages of history, enters into the situation. For Beech Grove citizens are proud that their community has grown from a little more than one thousand inhabitants to a community of over three thousand persons in a decade. “Neighbors" are other cities of the State. Line Since 1911 “Why, people would say we have a pretty poor town if we can’t support an electric line to Indianapolis,” an old citizen declared. "We’ve had the line since 1911 and It would be a blow to the town to allow it to die.” Rumor prevails in the town that company will suspend operations May 1, because its daily average of only 1,200 fares is insufficient to finance operations. Traction company has been in hands of various receiverships during last few years of its existence because the ever-increasing number of automobiles has destroyed busi- ■ ness. Fletcher Savings and Trust Company Is now receiver and has been orde-.-ed by Judge Harry O. Chamberhdn of Circuit Court to sell the line. Guy Rutledge, superintendent of the company, said he had received no orders to v cease running cars. However, he declared company has been running at a loss for many months, Tliree Busses several Beech Grove financiers are said to be making preparation

to operate three busses to and from Indianapolis. • On the other hand, there are Beech Groye citizens who believe the present system Is a detriment to the community. They ridicule the miniature cars, which they liken to the famous Toonerville trolley, and object to the fare of 12 cents charged. Three cars are run by the company, leaving at twenty-three-minute intervals during the day. Trip requires about thirty-five minutes, but when the power is low, long delays occur, according to regular passengers. Abandonment of traction line is opposed by many property owne s who fear it will reduce value of their homes. Belief that heavier taxes would be Imposed is chief stumbling block in path of proponents of annexation movement and indications are that their course will be bitterly opposed. Postmaster Wants Trolley John Clapp, postmaster and partner in grocery store, has a warm spot in his heart -for the trolley system. “It would be a calamity to allow the traction line to perish,” he said. Much of Beech Grove’s prosperity depends upon the 2,500 men who work at the Big Four shops there. And, unfortunately for the traction company, the force of employes is -rgely motorized. An observer counted 327 cars, many containing three or more persons leaving the shops one evening last week. One thousand ride the workmen's train between Union Sta tion and the shops while five hundred live in Beech Grove proper. There seems to be little prospect of sentiment inducting citizens to finance the traction company. A number have lost money in that “hole” during the years gone by and are loath to repeat the experiment. But community pride is a powerful force and there are optimists who believe the Beech Grove Traction Company cars will wobble along their time-honored route for years to come. DR. SACKETT IS SOUGHT Heir to Lars'* Estate, Medical Board Is To!j. Through the State board of medical examination and registration efforts have been made by John J. Dwyer, New York City attorney, to procure information regarding a D>\ Leon Sackett, formerly of Indiana, in order that settlement of a largj estate may be completed. In a letter to Miss Lucy Campbell, clerk of the medical board, Dwyer says Dr. Sackett was born In Indiana about 1845 and that he practiced medicine in the State between 1880 and 1900. “His descendants are entitled to a large estate,” the letter reads. Any one having information on the subject Is asked to communicate to Dwyer at 40 Wall Street, New York City. The State medical board had no record in its files of Dr. Sackett, Miss Campbell said.

All this week has been a holiday Muncie. The circus has opened its doors to the public and the great tent was crowded nearly every day. Boys played hooky from school. Perhaps the proudest boy in all Muncie was Robert Holliday, 12, of 823 N. Mulberry St. Robert has freckles, lots of ’em, and flaming red hair. All equipment used in the great show is placed by him. gathered up after the show, and little is lost, if any. One assistant with two helpers Is assigned to each ring and held responsible for the smooth functioning of the circus. Brady has the longest hours of all. He’s up at 6, when the great tents are erected, and he’s j the last man to leave when they are taken down for the move to the next town at 11 that night. Then there is William H. Ifound that one of the greatest aristocracies in the circus world are animal trainers. Their ancestors for years back have been in the business. There’s Robert McPherson, a brawny Scotchman, the lion and tiger trainer. His father and grandfather before him trained animals abroad. McPherson scoffed that it took a brave man to enter a cage of wild animals. It was a gift, ha said. Gift is good.
