SHIPS PUT OUT TO SEARCH FOR CREWjSBODIES Homeric Speeding for Mew York —Tragedy Is Described. Bn United Press ABOARD THE S. S. HOMERIC, April 22. (By Radio)—The White Star liner Homeric which yesterday finished a spectacular race with death just too late to aid the crippled Jap anese steamship Raifuku Maru, is speeding toward New York while boats trom Nova Scotian ports are reported en route to the scene of the disaster to search for the bodies of the 38 members of the crew. One by one the Japanese sailors, who, with no available life boats had faced death for more than live hours, slipped from their precarious perches into the icy waters. At the time the freighter disappeared death had already claimed the captain and entire crew. Operator Tells Story Chief Radio Operator Tomlinson of the Homeric today told the story of the tragedy. "After proceeding under forced draft eleven miles we sighted the fast sinking steamer at 11:05 a. m. At that hour the Japanese ship had a list of 50 degrees and we could see that this was increasing. "The Homeric approached on the windward side. It is not a simple matter to handle a ship of this size under the best of conditions. We were sorely handicapped by tremendously heavy seas. Oil on Water "We pumped oil on the water in vain, high seas prevented use either of life boats or life lines. "The Japanese sailors, overjoyed with aid in sight, had greeted the Homeric by waving their hands as they stood on that part of the deck that was still above water. But that jubilance was turned abruptly into trepidation when they realized the futility of the liner’s race with death. "They did attempt to launch a life raft but this proved disastrous. Most members of the crew were concentrated on the bridge which remained above water when the rest of the craft was virtually submerged. “One by one we saw the Japanese sailors slip into the water. By the time the Raifuku went down, the whole crew already had drowned.” DEATH IS INVESTIGATED Man Struck by Auto, Succumbs at Hospital. Coroner Paid F.
