I am not eure that Alice Hartley has not the right idea about this very Important phase of life. She is treating marriage as a business. She knows that if she'ean not he a success at that she can not make a success of anything. She respects Porter Breed principally because she knows that he can give her what is indispensable to her happipess — ail that money can buy. He has recently had another fortune left him. She Is determined, as she says, to be successful in woman's inevitable business. Asa rich man's wife she will be successful. Asa poor man's wife, she would he an abject failure. That is the reason why she has turned her attention to getting a man with mone yas a partner. Personally, I can see nothing wrong in this, for if she wanted to have a partner in any other business she would look out for one who was able to Invest In it the money needed to carry It on. With the frankness of a modern girl she discusses the whole matter with a lack of hypocrisy that is quite refreshing I am glad and I know that you will also be glad to help her In any way to attain her ambition. I have come to the conclusion. Ruth, that it is not always the poor girl who needs help the most. Sometimes the problem of the girl who moves among the rich, whose friends have plenty of money, who appears to all the world as a rich girl, are much harder to solve. Alice told me she expected to be married In about three weeks, and then she added with a grin at the humor of the whole thing: “Porter doesn't know It yet. but I'm almost certain that the ceremony will take place three weeks from Wednesday." “You see. Ruth, that Alice Hartley, although she dose not know it. Is a disciple of George Bernard Shaw, who Is the one man who has the courage to tell the truth about something that every woman knows if she will only talk honestlv about It. Every woman knows that v In reality she.is not the pursued, but the pursuer. She knows long before the man In th** case does that he Is going to propose marriage to her. Also she is quitq able to ward off any love making she does not care to accept. Therefore, you had better prepare to he In town by three weeks from Wednesday for j Alice will he disconsolate If you are j not here for her wedding. I shall gladly go and wish them j all joy, and I haven't the slightest ! doubt whatever that they will not i both he as happy as the average I married couple. I believe that all people would he I much happier if there was not an much stress put upon passionate love as a necessity to a happy marriage. Regard, respect, affection, similar tastes, sympathy and under standing, and last, hut not least, great tolerance, are much more Im portant. (Copyright, 1925. NKA Service, Inc.) Martha Lee Says HELLO GIRLS’ PROTEST INNOCENCE OF CHARGES
The “hello girls” are indignant. They want the world to know they are not home-breakers. A wife-whose husband held his marriage vows lightly wrote a letter bitterly denouncing the woman who, she said, had broken up her home. The “other” woman was a telephone operator.
Since her It tier was published the mails have brought letters from operators. declaring the attack on them was unfair. it be said here and now. for Hie sake of the operators, that 1 feel sure “The tVife Who Has Suffered," as the woman signed herself. did not mean to imply that telephone operators as a class are husband-thieves. f am confident that, even had she so meant her letter it would not have been taken se ; riously. No, “hello girls." you need not j fear for reputations as a whole, i althought undoubtedly there are in- I dividuals among you, as there are j among every group, who could not I logically join in your protest. We may grow impatient with you sometimes, we may grumble when you give us the wrong numbei — when we stop to think, we realize how remarkable It Is yon do not do that oftener—but we do not doubt your morals. • Absolutely Safe Dear Miss I>®: Wh.v pick on telephone operators:' I have been an operator for several years in an office where many Kiris are employed. Men rail us and into flirt and make dates. AH the OD*r ators I ever have known just laughed a( them. We have not time to flirt or talk, even if we wanted to. f have been married several years and t sincerely believe no married woman has anythin? to fear from telephone operators If that woman cannot trust her husband amon* telephone operators she had better tie a string: to him and never let him nut of her sight OPER ATOR NO. 3. Don’t Tell All Dear Miss Lee Here are a few lines to that lady that has so muoh trouble with her husband I want to say that
