NEW PLANE BY DUTCH DESIGNER IS FOOL-PROOF 4 Fokker Attains Stability by Construction of Ship’s Wings. Ihi Times Special LONDON, April 17.—A fool-proof passenger airplane, judged by competent men to be capable of eliminating half the accidents to which planes now succumb, has been demonstrated at Croydon. The plane is the work of Anthony Fokker, the Dutch designer of the wasps that flew for Germany during the war. Dipping, diving and stalling his motor, Fokker demonstrated his plane to Air Vice-Marshal Sir Sefton Brancker and other experts. Sir Sefton gained his experience firsi hand, sitting with nine other passengers and the pilot In the comfortable limousine body of Fokker’s new monopolane. Design Is Secret When Fokker had brought his ship to earth, Flight Lieutenant P. S. Bui man demonstrated anew single seater air force biplane designed to ,fly as safely as the larger machine. The difference between Fokker'.' heavy monoplane and the single seater is that the latter is equippe with devices to produce stability while Fokker achieved it wdth design. The single seater has small auxiliary planes between its main planes which are manipulated by the pilot to correct tendencies to stall. Stirling—that is, losing flying speed—causes most air accidents. Fokker’s passenger machine possesses a wing curve thiit varies from three feet next to the fuselage to six inches at the tips. Hovers Like Hank With Fokker at the controls the monoplane climbed steeply in a. gusty wind of thirty-five miles velocity. The Dutch designer deliberately reduced his speed, stalled his engine, hovered in the wind like a hawk, descended sharply and went through the antics that are likely to bring a plane crashing to the ground. The big winged monoplane sailed on. Fokker repeated his stunts. Nothing happened. During the demonstration Fokker sometimes removed his hands from the controls, but the plane would not desert the air for a head-on collision with the earth. “This monoplane is not entirely crash-proof.” Fokker explained, “but
