EASTER, SEASON>OF BEAUTY, ARRIVES IN GREAT GLORY

Splendid Choirs and Noted Soloist-; Have Prepared Wonderful Programs for the Great Day—lmpressive Services Announced at All Churches. By The Visitor Easter in all of its great and impressive glory will be observed in Protestant and 'Catholic churches of the city tomorrow, marking the close of the Lenten period.

The great choirs of the churches, ■with special soloists and choruses, have prepared stirring inspirational programs of song and rejoicing. Probably never in the history of Indianapolis have such elaborate

steps been taken to make this Easter Sunday the greatest ever observed here. During the [ienten season the Protestant churches held revival meetings, most of them closing totoday. The new members will be received into church membership. The season in the Catholic churches have

been observed in all the impressiveness associated with the season.

Amy t'leary Morrison, organist at Central Christian Church. Each year there seems to be a<jded interest in the part that music plays in church life. Organists in several of the downtown churches have held musical preludes during the noon hour and on Sunday afternoons during the Lenten season. On Easter Sunday music will hold a most prominent part in all services. ST. PAULS EPISCOPAL First Celebration. (1:30 A M Processional—" Come Ye Faithful" (170) Sullivan Scmt-Choral Communion Service. WEEKLY SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Loyalty to Great Ideal Is Test of Man’s Character

The International Uniform SundaySchool Lemon for April 12. The cripple at the Beautiful Gate. Acta 3:1-11. By William E. Gilroy, I). I). Editor of The Congregationalist EOYALTY to a great ideal and to a noble institution is often the ultimate test of a man’s character. It marks the real man, his actual faith, and his devotion to principle, apart from the weaknesses, shortcomings, meannesses and failures of other men. Most of us tend to allow our loyalty and our devotion, even to the highest things, to be affected by the acion of others. Some men refuse to go to church, or to join the church because many church members are full of fault and inconsistency. Some men allow themselves to speak disparlagly of patriotism, because often mer in high places have made it a cloak for their own selfish schemes and purposes, have in fact so debauched and debased it that -the great Dr. Johnson said Ironically that "patriotism was the last refuge of a scoundrel.’ Patriotism, of course, is no such thing, no matter how much selfseekers may drag it in the dust. It was the hope and refuge and strength of men like Lincoln. And the church, no matter how deep the hypocrisy of some of its members, has been the home of saints and prophets. It represents for good men the highest things, regardless of the base uses to which worldly men have endeavored to prostitute it. i Real Loyalty Note how splendidly this loyalty to the highest comes out in Peter and John, who, ,our lesson says, “went up together into the temple." This temple was the official center of JewisA religion. But a few weeks before official religious leaders

had hounded their Master to death. How natural it would have been for Feter and John to say, "We’ll have nothing to do with the temple; we'll never go near that place which symbolizes the religion and power of those who have crucified our Lord.” But, no. They saw in the tepiple tho house of God —something that was holy in spite of the wickedness of Herod, who bad built it, and in spite of priests and religious leaders whose bigotry and hypocrisy de graded themselves. They preserved their own purity of motive and vision, and they went to the temple to pray! O for faith like that, that enables us to do our duty, and follow the highest, and see in lofty symbols pure ami rich meaning, e\en when others pervade holy places and things with their own .blindness and meonneses of soul! This example of Peter and John should not lose its significance for us. Then note, too, that it was Peter and John who were going up together. Not John and James, the brothers in ambition and rivalry for the first places in the kingdom. Peter had had his ideas about the foremost place. Though all should have denied Christ, he w*as quite sure of himself. And at the last, when Jesus had suggested to Peter what was to become of him, he had not been quite content; he had wanted to know what was go'ng to happer- to John (John 21:21-22). Yet here vere these two,, purged of their selfish ambitions, purged of all hate against those who had slain their Lord, going up into the temple together to pray. If miracles could happen it would surely be under circumstances like this. But there was something more. There was the spirit of complete consecration, and the supreme readiness to serve. Is it too much to say that miracles

And for fear of Him the keepers lid shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye; for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His dis•iples that He is risen from the dead; and, behold. He goeth before you into Gallilee there shall ye see Him: 10, I have told you.

always do happen when these conditions are fulfilled? “Striking Ectson’’ Here was this poor cripple, looking earnestly to Peter and John, as they stopped at his plea for alms. They had nothing to give him, but themselves, and their faith. This Peter declares; "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee.” And then, note the record. “He took him by the right hand and lifted him up." Suppose that everywhere in the world tomorrow men and women of professing Christian faith and purpose should become thus thoroughly devoted to the suffering, the weak and the needy. Suppose that those who have silver and gold gave their treasure In full consecration to God and to humanity. And suppose that. In addition, those who had neither gold nor silver gave themselves. Could Christians then not say to suffering and bleeding humanity, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk,” with full assurance of the manifestation of God’s power? But divine ..power and human agency go together In the accomplishment of great things. Peter’s faith did not leave all the giving to God. He emphasized God's grace, but he said none the less. “Such as I have I give.” And while he trusted in God’s power, he didn’t fail to make use of his own strong right arm, “He took him by the right hand, and he lifted him up.” If men everywhere would give “such as they have,” and would Btretch out their strong right arms in helpfulness, even more wonderful things might happen today than happened long ago at the Beautiful gate of the temple. Humanity that now languishes in helplessness might indeed b© “walking and leaping and praising God.” *
