SLICK, STYLISH YOUTH NOW RULES IN CROOKS’ WORLD
By Orla Woody The day of the quick witted, nlm-)le-flngered, brainy gentry of crooklom has passed, and in its place •omes a callow, stylishly-dressed routh with slickened hair and a •ulck trigger finger. Such is the ixistlng condition in the opinion of :rlme detecters of long experience. Why the change? Jazz and prohibition are named as jlaying a large part in the presentlay crook’s makeup. No longer do fancy aliases, such is “Silk Hat Harry,” “Three Hand'd Annie” and “Gentleman Joe,” {race police records. Instead, it will t> found that on numerous occasions the nice, quiet little fellow living In your neighborhood, whom very one likes, has committed the jank hold-up or filling station robDery that has aroused so much comment. Motives for the majority of the crimes have been usually the need of ready cash to entertain a “lady fair” or to purchase clothes to impress the “shebas.” Women too have become much bolder and police have been harassed with shop lifters, filling station banditresses and even feminine bank jobbers. Detectives say that no more can

brought to light after a sensaitonal raid on one of the largest rendevoue for bootleggers In the Middle West. It was discovered that the majority of the illicit booze dealers had a past criminal record and had at one time been gangsters. Police say that the booze business is probably more lucrative and less hazardous to the old-timers than thievery and safe-cracking. Knowledge of the underworld and the workings of the law is used in getting ghuge cargoes of liquor through several States or the robbing of a distillery, instead of carefully planning a bank robbery or pay-roll hold-up. Just ho wdaring and bold the bandits were that used to rove the country and terrorize communities is well illustrated by the story of F. E. Miller, manager of the local branch of Pinkerton's Detective Agency in relating the operations of the famous Reno brothers gang in Indiana. The late Pinkertons were responsible for the arrest of the Reno brothers. According to Miller, the base of operations for the Reno gang was

their farms near Seymour, Ind. Using Seymour as headquarters they gathered together a group of expert safe-crackers, train robbers, and counterfeiters. The gang, Miller said, first gained their reputation by a series of raids on express trains which netted them thousands of dollars. They crossed the country on horse-back leaving behind them a trail of slain men and empty safes. One of their most daring exploits, was the raiding of the Daviess County treasury at Gallatin. Mo. Then the Pinkertons got busy. One day a man appeared in Seymour and opened up a saloon, another man came and posed as a gambler and shortly afterward a third made his appearance and got a job as freight handler at the railway station. The three men and members of the Reno gang became acquainted. One day the gambler Invited John
