Columbia University, New York City, 1b spending $16,000,000 in new buildings, one of which costing almost $2,060,000 will house the university radio section. When the airplane express between Boston and New York begins in May, cabins of the twelve passenger machines will each have a broadcast received. This airline express will fly from New York to Boston in one hour and fifteen minutes. Entirely too much time is being taken up by various stations reading telegrams over the air. The average listener of today does not care to sit and listen to an announcer read scores of messages that the “program is coming in fine.” Several of the larger stations refuse to acknowledge messages or cards over the air and they are to

be commended for it. Saturday evening KFIiU at Bristow acknowledged over one hundred and fifty messages in one hour. KDKA, WEAF. WWJ, WGN, WGY, WCAP, KOA and scores of other stations refuse to acknowledge messages that are received while a program is in progress. Ail telegrams are acknowledged by mall and still these stations are perhaps swamped with messages during the broadcasting of a program but they never bore their listeners with them. Directors of these stations believe that the reading of messages detract from the programs and when it is taken into consideration that the above stations are among the most popular in the country there must be something to it afier aIL Regardless of what band or orchestra you listen to. there never will be a duplicate of the United States Marine Band. Occasionally a selection will be without special interest so the listener, but this is a rare occasion. and no one ever fails to find enjoyment listening to them. The thanks goes to WCAP. Mot,*, people who listen to dance music have r.n orchestra that they prefer. Those who have failed to hear Man's Rainbow Lane Orchestra, from KOA Denver, are missing a rei.l treat. WMH of Cincinnati has been sold to the Kodel Radio Corporation and will soon come on the air with new call letters. Th' new owners have spent considerable time and money improving the station and claim that it will rank among the best in the country. The Indianapolis 500 mile Speedway Race will be broadcast by two stations this year, WGN of Chicago and WFBM the station of the Merchants Heat and Light Company. WGN will broadcast the race on 370 meters and the Indianapolis station on 268 meters. Radio fans within 1,000 miles should be able to listen In.

PROGRAM ATWATER KENT RADIO ARTISTS Thursday, April 9 On Thursday Evening, April 9th. at 8:00 P M.. the Atwater Kent Radio artists will broadcast the famous cantata “Stabat Mater” through WEAF and associated stations. The Stabat Mater is a medieval poem of religious character which has been •ct to music by many composers. The best known setting is that by Rossini —one that is admirable for concert as well as church use. The most widely known of the eleven parts in which this is written is the “Cuius Animan,” a tenor solo. The two other more fam.liar selections are -The Inflammatus and the duet for soprano and alto ”Quis cst Homo.” The latter is one of the most beautiful duets ever written and is a real task for any two singers. The Quartets are not so well known, hut are none the less beautiful. “Sancta Mater” which comes in the second part, opens with the tenor and soprano interweaving a melody with beautiful effect. so which the other voices are added shortly. The entire work is so well written and so varied and skillfnl in its handling of voice and orchestra that it bids fair to he immortal. Radio Editor Times: Have been reading the radio section of the Times with interest and will say that it Is great. I sure look forward to Thursday eve when I can get the good interesting radio news and events to read. I do not know if there is anything so wonderful about my log, but here goes, WFBM, KDKA, WRBO, WLW, 7:30 to 10.30 March 30, WBBZ, WOS, WCCO, and three more that I cannot find listed, but I understood the announcers to say KMKD, WMWU and WWA. These were received all on a single tube using a HVt “B” battery and one dry celL Using a low loss coil of my own make tuning with two Var. Condensers. A. W. JOHNSON. 1834 Lockwood St., City. P. S. Please give the location of the last three sets of letters if possible. I also heard some on talking loud and clear saying 1-2-3-4 hello 1-2-3-4. Who was it? The stations that you refer to are perhaps WWJ, Detroit, KFKB, Milford, Kan., and WMAQ Chicago. The 1-2-3-4 calling was one of the local stations testing.
