SYNOPSIS Chiekie. beloved and only daughter of an old-fashioned couple. Jonathan and Jennie Bryce, experiences a wild sense of joy when Arthur Sontag kisses her on returning from her first, dance. He turns his attentions to Dolly Bacon when he learns Chieklo loves hint. Heartbroken, she starts on a business career. Ohickie's modesty causes her boss. Harry Lewis, to treat her stiffly. Sophisticated Janina Knowles, a co-worker, gives Chiekie some very wrong pointers. She feels a bit lonesome since Mary, her chum, has married Edward MePike. and she refuses Jimmy Blake's marriage proposal only because he is poor. Chiekie attends a party given especially for her by wealthy Jake Munson. Bob find Ida Larkin and “Nicky,” a bacheor. help create the gaiety which thrills Chiekie. Unbeknown to the others Barry Dunne and Chiekie steal away before the party is over, and the next day go for a drive in the country. Chiekie can hardly wait to see him again at his office window next morning. Janina tells her the whole crowd is angry with her. GO ON WITH THE STORY By Elenore Meherin More piercingly than this, he saw her sitting motionless and unresistant, her hands clasped in her lap. Something appealing and wistful and ever so girlish in the beauty of her face caught him with a strange, persistent thrill. She said she didn’t kiss men. Could that be true? A girl with that hair and eyes and dear little mouth bke that. No —he couldn't quite bel.eve that. But that old dad of hers—domineering old fellow—kept tab >n her. His heart raced a bit—thinking all this. True or not —she was a wonder—a prize- -different from others—he would meet her as she came from work. Barry Dunn was a young man—not yet twenty-four—full of ambition. Underneath his happ,’ go lucky manner was a strong, poetic streak thnt made him sensitive and self-conscious. He liked girls, but as a boy had suffered miseries because of his red hair and terrible freckles. It was a surprise to him, coming into manhood, to find himself attractive to women. He couldn’t at first believe it—in fact, was never quite certain. He rather enjoyed experimenting—trying out his various charms. So he had ‘‘lost days,” as he darkly boasted to Chiekie. For all that he was a pleasant, kind young man who had ‘‘played about” gallantly and doing as little harm as possible. He had no unholy or very cruel ghosts in his closet. He took the phone—called her—asked her to wait just outside the building for him. She tried to keep her voice low, but It fluttered off gaily. • • • mANTNA sat opposite. Idle. C’hlcikle wondered If she had heard. A little before' 5 she stacked her paper, put them neatly and swiftly in the wire baskets. "What’s your hurry?” Janina drawled. Chiekie took her hat, left quickly without answering. “L c’s hurry,” she said to him without greeting. “I don’t want Ja' lna to see us.” “Surreptitious like! Say, this has been the darndest. longest day!”

Any one who is interested in puzzles will find plenty of them by studying time tables. There are many pretty problems hidden In the page of railroad schedules. Here is a good one from the time table of the Zero branch of the Blank Railroad. A local leaves the town of Alton at 6:03 and makes stops as Indicated; the mileage of each station being given. The express leaves twenty minutes later, and maintains a constant rate of speed until It reaches Kelso, four minutes ahead of the local. The puzzle is this: at what station; or between what stations, and at what time, did the express pass the local? Last puzzle answer: “As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives; Every wife had seven sacks. Every sack had seven cats; Every cat had seven kits: Kits, cats, sacks and wives. How many were there going to St. Ives?* There was only ONE going to St. Ives; namely, the person telling the story. As he met the man with the wives, cats, etc., the strange party must have been coming from St. Ives: hence they have nothing to do with the problem.
