Conn., April 6.—Although Gerald Chapman, mall-ban-dit, and now a convicted murderer is sentenced to die June 25, it developed today that he still has a fighting chance for his life. He may be granted anew trial on appeal or tha Federal Government may demand his return to complete a 25-year mail robbery sentence. Commutation by President Coolidge of his Federal sentence was informally suggested at the Justice Depai'tment today as the way in which the Government may solve the problem of whether to surrender Chapman to the Connecticut authorities or to reclaim him to serve out his sentence.
