A sure sign of spring. WGY is to broadcast the Ringling Bros, and Barnum and Bailey Circus direct from Madison Square Garden, New York City. WF’BM station ,he Merchants Heat and Light Company, Indianapolis, needs no excuses for the programs that have been broadcast since the station went on the air several weeks ago. Orchestra numbers by the Gus Ndwards orchestra are full of pep and this organization ranks among the best In tne country when it comes to real dance music. The wave of the station Is sharp, and clear and the modulation is all that could be asked for. This station has been reaching out consistently and is sending Indianapolis music and good will to tUI parts of the United States and Canada daily. Radio is destined to have a wholesome effect on our English language. Its advent into this field is quite timely, for many forces have been contributing to the degeneracy of our mother tounge. The man who broadcasts an address knows that his invisable audience will give more attention to the language of their invisible speaker than if he were speaking to them directly. He will take more pains to articulate every word in order to make himself understood. J In speaking from a platform to an assembled audience, the speakers personality will counteract many defects of his speech. He might scramble his English, slur letters and syllables, descend to sterotyped phrases and even slang, and make it all pass muster, because he is there himself. It is quite different when he is heard and not seen, and no one is more conscious of that than the speaker himself. The ears of those who hoar are greeted by a message

that not only represents his best thought, but that is couched in correct language. Fraternal organizations arc reaching their members by radio. WJJD is not very old but members of the Loyal Order of Moose know that they can tune in on Mooreheart a.id hear the music and latest news from headquarters. From telegrams, cards and letters that have poured into the Times Office since the broadcasting of the State basketball finals we believe that every basketball and radio fan in the State had a box seat for the tournament. A great many Indianapolis fans have been complaining that WSAI, the United States Playing Card station at Cincinnati, has been coming in very poorly for the past several weeks. Something should be done to clear up this condition as no station can hope to command the attention of the listener under these conditions. For some reason or other WSAI has h;ui considerable trouble in getting out as clearly as they might for some time.
Condenser Plates Have New Use
The small panel In back of the set, that holds the binding posts, may be set on a pair of brackets by a simple operation. The brackets are made of strips cut from old condenser plates. The bhotos show how this Is done.
FOR THE . NOTEBOOK The prices of loud speakers range from $7 to SIOO. A handy tool to have on the work bench Is pliers which turn the wire into a round loop. When wiring anew set or repairing an old one turn the panel upside down over a box. It saves the dials. Because of dust, moisture and oxidization a crystal should be cieaned with gasoline every ten days or two weeks. High-frequency radio currents cannot travel efficiently if the surface of parts is permitted to become dull or corroded. Never use an ammeter for testing “B” batteries. An ammeter is a low-resistance instrument and will act in the same manner as placing a direct short on a battery. WATCH CONNECTIONS Must Not Cross Wires Under Screws and Nuts When connecting a wire to a flat screw or nut the wire should pass nearly nround the screw, but not cross itself. This allows the nut or screw to seat itself evenly. If two or more wires are to be clamped under the same screw, a washer should be put between each wire, or the wires should be twisted together before being bent around the screw. Norway is one of the leaders of radio transmission in Europe.
