CARPENTER BACK FOLLOWING PROBE Court Reporter Testifies in Federal Investigation, Walter N. Carpenter, Indianapolis court reporter, returned to Indianapolis today after testifying Tuesday at St. Louis, Mo., in congres- ! sional investigation into official conduct of Federal Judge George W. English Judre English, who was declared by witnesses Tuesday to be a court tyrant, acted 1 as district judge for Indiana during the vacation of Judge Albert B. Anderson last summer. .Carpenter, who took down the proceedings befors Judge English ! here, identified a transcript of proceedings in order to show that C. B. I Thomas, of St. Louis, Mo., Judge English’s referee in bankruptcy, acted as an attorney in Federal \ court here in the Hawkins Mort- < gage Company bankruptcy case. Through action which practically | set aside Judge Anderson's rulings in the case, Judge English delayed the bankruptcy action. On his return to the bench. Judge Anderson harshly criticised ‘‘strange proceedings” which had occurred in his absence. Thomas left the courtroom under a barrage of criticism from the court.
