HENRY TO JOIN TRIBE TODAY—BUTLER TRACKMEN ON 2,500 MILE TRIP
Petty Deal Reported Closed—BrookQ lyn Pitcher Appears Satisfied . Over Transfer to Indians. i By Eddie Ash Times Sports Editor. PLANT CITY, Fla., March 25.—Owner Smith and Manager Bush hustled away to St. Petersburg today and conferred with Manager Robinson of the Brooklyn club, and “Robby” told the Tribe officials Henry would be in Plant City today. Henry expressed satisfaction over the transaction, informing Owner Smith he hoped to be a mainstay for Indianapolis. The lefthander appears to be in good physical condition, though he ’.js not had much practice this month. The Petty-Henry deal is officially closed now, according to Bush.
Henry hoped to work regularly for the Indians and thereby win another opportunity to return to a big league team. Owner Smith's efforts to land a pitcher from the Giants have not succeeded thus far, and he is beginning to lose faith In John MoOraw's promise to send him a hur’.er. After Pitcher Smith asked a club owner in the Southern Association to place a price on a pitcher, but no answer has been received. Buck Schemanske and Fred Fitzsimmons were slated to do the Tribe pitching here today when Ownie Bush’s Hoosier tossers tangled with Hendricks’ Cincinnati Reds. FxW* Krueger was assigned to do the catching. There was keen rivalry in the contest because last spring the Indians took a fall out of the Queen City boys and the Ciney performers were crestfallen over losing to an American Association team. Indications were that Manager Hendricks would trot out his best lineup this afternoon to battle the Bushmen. Schmandt In Game Ray Schmandt, first baseman, who has been having a very bad time with his throwing arm, expected to return to action in today’s game. Ray took a good work-out Tuesday and succeeded in tossing the ball with air pressure behind it. Pitcher Jess Petty, southpaw ace sold to Brooklyn Monday, was ordered to report to the big league outfit today. The game with the Reds today and a contest with the Phillies here Thursday will close the Indians’ stay In Florida. The Tribe Bquad will leave here Thursday night for Memphis. Games will be played in both Memphis and Little Rock and Manager Bush probably will have to divide the squad In order to fill the dates. A contest also will be staged In Jackson, Tenn. HEAVYWEIGHT SITUATION IN COMPLICATED MUDDLE Everyone Concerned Marks Time After Action of N. Y. Boxing Commission in Dempsey Case. By Henry L. Farrell United Prett Staff Correspondent NSW YORK, March 25.—With Jack Dempsey on the ineligible list by a sentence of the New York boxing commission the heavyweight situation is more complicated than it has been at any time since the champion cultivated interests outside the ring.
All of the principals involved admitted today \.n\t they didn't know what would come out of It. After all. It seems that Dempsey is still the champion and that the penalty of being denied the privilege of fighting in New York will not break his heart as he is not in need of money and seems to be interested very little in the fighting business. Mullen* Speaks Paddy Mullens, manager of Wills said today that he would not claim the title for his fighter. Eddie Kane, manager of Tom Gibbons, who also has a challenge on file with the commission, said In a message received here today that Gibbons would not claim the title until Dempsey admitted that he was nod going to fight again. Tex Rickard, Madison Square Garden promoter, said that he was waiting to see what will happen. Case Closed James A. Farley, chairman of the commission, who led the campaign Against the champion, said the case vas closed as far as he was concerned. The impression prevails here that the action against Dempsey will open the way for a fight between Gibbons and Wills. Gibbons is willing to accept the match on suitable terms, but Wills hasn't committed himself definitely.
