Roosevelt Brothers to Start Expedition Into Africa Next Month With Veteran of 48 Treks Into the Dark Continent. NBA Service Writer “It is there that I am going, where the boulders and the snow lie. With a trusty, nimble tracker that I know; I have sworn an oath to keep it on the horns of Ovis Poli, And the/Red Gods call me out and I must go.” NEW YORK, March 23 In the depts of the Brazilian jungle Kermlt Roosevelt heard the taunting lines of Kipling that inspired the hazardous expedition he will lead in April. It was during the historic “River of Doubt" trip when ho'accompanied his father, “T. R.” The camp fire was lighted, the day s hunt was done. 'Che luring verse made a profound impression upon the adventurous youth. And in the years that since have passed, the hidden challenges of the poem penetrated the tough skin of business problems and on many a night maps of little known mountain passes of Turkestan and Mongolia were taken from the library shelves and studied. "Ovis Polf!"..ludicrous sounding words to the unlnitiate. .but to the adventurer they bring pictures of the great homed, giant ram of the Pamir plateau, 20,000 fee*, ibove sea level, “on the white roof of the world." “The head of heads.” Kipling called this almost fabulous animal which, since the days of the master traveler, Marco Polo, has -been sung in song and story. The wind-whipped haunts of the giant ram were last described, so far as is known, in 1838 by the Lieutenant John Wood Expedition. To reach the hunting grounds the explorers will meet at Pesawar. There a shekari. a "trusty, nimble tracker,” will meet them and. with forty native to be picked up at Srinagar, go to the northernmost India and start through either the Hunza or the Ley pass. There will be but three white

Kipling’s Mysterious ‘ovi| Poli’ to Be Run Down in Its Rendezvous by Party Headed for Country as Yet Unexplored.’ men: Kermit Roosevelt, Theodore Jr., the “tenderfoot" of the party, and George K. Cherrie, 60-year-old veteran of forty-eight expeditions. He was companion to Col. Roosevelt on the "River of Doubt" trip. The ears of Cherrie have never been stopped to the "call of the Red Gods.” South America has been the chief lure. It will be on his vast experience that the expedition will lean for guidance. But the Himalavan country they will enter has never besn visited by American explorers. "So I can’t give any certain picture ,of how we will get there, or just where we will go," he recites. "I was doing a little laboratorlal work in Vermont when I got a call from Kermit. Arriving in New Tork I picked up a paper and there saw my name mentioned as a member of the exploration party. “It has been in the mind of Kermit for a long, long time. No, I don’t think I ever heard the colonel mention the prospect of| the trip. But many times I have" heard Kermit. speak of the Ovia Poll, and there was a faraway look in his eyes. This is the one time of year we can travel there. And. even then, there are many hazards. It will be spring and avalanches will be sliding down the mountain. So we plan to do most of our traveling by night when the sun will be off the snows. We will , carry special lanterns for night travel. "Yes—we may find some un-heard-of animals. That is. we hope to.” And here the eyes of the veteran wanderer lighted. “But we will be content If we can find the elusive Ovis Poll, or the longhaired tiger that lurks in the lower snow country, the goltered gazelle, the markor or the yarkand stag.” ■ Cherrie goes ahead to make final preparations and then, as Kermit recites: “Do you know tin world's white roof tree—do you know that windy rift Where the baffling mountain eddies chop and change? I)o you know the long day's patience, belly down on frozen drift Where the head of heads Is feedout of range. It Is there that I am going where the boulders and the snow He, With a trusty, nimble tracker that I know; • ' j I have sworn an oath to keep iH on the horn of Ovis PoH, And the Red Gods call me out and T must go.”
