BRITISH AIRSHIP TO BE 700 FEET LONG \ Cigar Shaped Body Will Increase-Speed to 90 Miles an Hour —Everything Inside but Engines.

By John Gunther United Press Staff Correspondent LONDON, England, March 20. — Imagine a great silver cigar, about TOO feet long, with a displacement of some five million cubic feet. Then you will get some idea of the nerw air liner Great Britain la building, said to compromise the most revolutionary advance In the whole history of air navigation. For this new dirigible will contain the crew in the hull and the passengers In the hull—there will be no hanging gondolas or outside saloons—the pilot’s window will be In the nose. This streamline body will extend the cruising radius of the giant ship by thousands of miles, decrease its fuel construction, and Increase Its spend to ninety miles an hour. Construction has already started. First news of the new airship was given by the United Press In a series of mall articles some months ago. The current announcement is made possible by official Information divulged by the air ministry. Build Two The new ship will be one of a pair to be built. They will be called t 100 and R-101. Each la about twice the size of the Tverlcan Dos Angeles. The new design Is the work of Commander C. D. Burney, M. P., who Is In charge of the construction of one of the ships. The Airship Guarantee Company 1s building It, with the air ministry In close supervision. Commander Burney, In common with many airship designers, realized that a perfect streamline body was the ideal In such construction. He has been working toward this ideal for many years. And now It appears that it Is achieved. Pilots, navigators, crew and passengers will be accommodated In the actual body of the craft. The only projections below the airship will be cars containing the engines, placed far back. The pilot and navigating officer, instead of being located as at j>res ent, below the hull, will be In an observation compartment In the nose of the airship, curved windows providing them with a clear view. All Inside Passengers and crew will occupy the Interior portion of the airship, amidships. In the space which has hitherto been w.-urte or utilized by gas bags. Fu>m the sides a clear view will bi obtained through windows of double glass. "This j^mpliflcation of design,” says the official statement, "as proved on behalf of the company by experiments in the National Physical Laboratory, Insures a considerable increase In the range of flight. With P 1 greater flight -ang j. It will bo poslible to place bases io> - stops the England-India-AustrLi'la route at greater distances to one another." Comment which b*s appeared stats- that a trip w)l' possible from London to Capetown In five

days, London to Bagdad in three, and London to Australia in seven. "If all goes well and we realize our expectations," said an official of the company, “a regular airship service should be In full swing two years from new.” Ready in 1926 The ship will be finished itj Is hoped, before the end of 1926, with trial flights on the program immediately thereafter. The subsidiary invention which haj made Commander Burney's work possible concerns an improved mooring mast. It is rapidly being discovered that the question of mooring masts is the crux of the whole airship-avia-tion problem and the enclosed superstructure such as planned for the new ship would be Impossible with the mooring masts at present used. But researches to which both the American Goodyear Zeppelin Company and the German Zeppelin Company contributed have resulted in a British invention—of anew type mooring masts —of the utmost Importance. This mast will receive the whole nose of the airship In a swivel arrangement. Floating Mast What is more, this mast can be attached to a floating base. This fact la considered of supreme importance. It means that masts no longer need be permanent, cumbersome affairs. They can be attached, for instance, to battleships. The English government places such an extreme importance to these twin corTollary discoveries—the new mast and the new airship—that not the least considerable interest In the situation comes with the official announcement that on imperial air port Is soon to be built by the government. It will be exactly Vhat It says—an imperial air port That Is It will be an alrsclp static j, an airship station exclusively, and one built and maintained by the imperial government. The selected la at Karachi, near Bomoay, about half way between London and Australia. It Is already disclosed that the cost will be about seven million dollars. PULLS HIS OWN TOOTH .
