HALF-CRAZED STORM VICTIMS HUNT DEAD Bodies Found Pierced by Heavy Timbers Carries Dead Babe in Arms.
Bv United Press / BENTON, 111., March 19. Tragedy stalked through West Frankfort today as the half crazed victims of yesterday’s terrific hurricane hunted for their families, friends and homes. But today grief had taken the place of the erratic shrieks which pierced the town yesterday. An eyewitness of the entire affair, W. H. Purcell, describes the scenes thus: “Confusion reigned. Houses had been moved from their foundations. Bides had been torn off, leaving bedrooms exposed. In some places the houses had been tumbled into little mounds of debris, with nothing left to show but a heap of boards, plaster and a few* stones. ‘‘Some of the women folks were near insane. One woman ran around the crowd shouting inarticulately. Her jabbering was in a foreign tongue and no ono could aid her. “A little girl grasped each passerby asking for ‘Mamma,’ but there was no answer. “Miners, blackened by the coal dust of their work, could be seen prying frantically at the debris that a few hours before had been their homes. One miner carried an infant in his arms—lifeless—yet he insisted to every one the baby was alive. “In the ruins of another house lay a man and wife. It was Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roberts, both of whom had been injured dangerously. Rescuers were constructing rude stretchers of two-by-fours and odd boards—which a few hours before had been parts of a house—with which to carry the two across the mud to waiting motor cars. All available motor cars had been pressed into set vice as ambulances. “And above all there were halfcrazed shouts of persons as they pulled their dead and dying relatives from beneath the debris. Some were so badly injured they died before being placed on the stretchers. Others died en route to hospitals. ‘‘Little groups huddled around in the street, first shouting, then moaning as they attempted to realize what had happened to their homes and their families. “Near the roundhouse of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad was found the body of a man, his neck broken and a two-by-four piercing his body. A woman was found close by with a stick driven through her head. Other bodies were found with arms and legs twisted completely off.” HORROR OF FIRE AND DEATH TOLD BY EYEWITNESS First Outsfderto Reach Town Counts 150 Bodies at One Morgue, Bv United Press DUQUOIN, 111., March 19—The first authentic story of the destruction of De Soto and Murphysboro, 111., was told today by A. W. Essick, editor of the Duqoln Call. Essie kwas the first outsider to get into Murphysboro after the storm struck and his description of the tragedy was the first authentic word out of the stricken city. "The storm struck the city at the southwest corner and ewept directly through the business section, cutting a swath about 100 yards wide. “The dome was lifted completely off the city hall and hurled down the main street. The high school was demolished and virtually every building in the path of the storm was wrecked. "Fire broke out almost immediately after the stdrm swept over the town. One woman was burned to death and I counted 150 bodies of storm victims In one undertaking establishment. "From Murphysboro I went directly of De Soto. This town is completely wiped from the map. Death and destruction are everywhere and not one-third of the population escaped death in the hurricane. {‘‘The scene Is that of absolute and Indescribable desolation and the horror of,fire adds to the travail of the day.” OTDOOFIrT AT PALM BEACH Bv Times Bveoia l PALM BEACH. Fla., March 19. Fire destroyed the Breakers and Palm Beach hotels and a number of cottages here late Wednesday. Damage is estimated at $4,000,000.
