MAYORALTY CAMPAIGN IS NOW UNDER WAY
Five in Primary Fight for Republican Nomination —Duvall, Lemcke and W iimeth Regarded as Leaders at Present. With five candidates in the field the race for the Republican nomination for mayor is now vigorously under way. Three of the candidates are outstanding and political observers believe the field will dwindle down to two soon. Ralph A. Lemcke and John Duvall are regarded as the leaders in the free-for-all primary race at present.
Both th* Lemcke ana Duvall campaigns arc definitely under way formation of airtight organizations and establishment of headquarters. The candidacy of City Judge Delbert O. Wilmeth has assumed un-looked-for proportions, however, and friends of the jurist predict he will lie in the running when the vo£es are counted. Lemcke, representing the ShankArm ttage-Jewett faction of the Republican party, Is pulling support from the city administration forces and from the antl-Klan voters, while Duvall is backed by the George V. Coffin county organization, and will Jikely get Klan support. ■ It is said by some that Coffin may Pbring- out another candidate and friends of Former Sheriff George Snider are urging that he make the race, p'rienda of Snider claim he was promised support of the Coffin faction, but that while he was in Florida, Coffin switched to Duvall. It is said the switch did not set very well with Snider although it is said he ha.s been promised reward in an official capacity should the Duvall ticket go over. W. S. Frye of the Frye Transfer Company has opened headquarters st 1015 Roosevelt building, and is organizing a city-wide campaigp. Frye will announce his platform and a list of aides within the next few days, he said. Frye is running independently of any faction, he ec'M when he made his announcement. Howard E. Cadle, who announced his candidacy some months ago is not making an active campaign to date, but his friends say he will get into the swim in the near future. Lucius O. Hamilton, who withdrew from the race several days ago, has Indicated he will support Ijemcke. Hamilton in withdrawing his name declared city politics now place for any but a professional politician. Friends of Judge Wilmeth are pointing !to the “horse race*' he made for t lie city judgeship and say hefims been working up an organization and pledging support for the past several months. city school board, filed his candidacy late today with city clerk on the Democratic ticket. M. J. Spencer, who has been considered as a likely candidate, has announced he will not run. Reginald Sullivan, Seventh District Demooratlc chairman, is being udged by friends to make the race, and a petition signed by several thousrnd voters was presented to Sullivan Thursday. Although he has not made a definite Vatement ,his announcement is expected within the next few days. Jackson K. Landers. Fred Hoke and Frank Wampler are others mentioned as likely Democratic candidates. Wampler has intimated that with proper support he would make the race. William E. Clauer, Democratic city chairman, has declared he has no pet candidate far the mayoralty and Is only willing to support the best man for the race. Clauer defeated .the Russel Ryan “machine’’ which has been in control of city and county Democratic politics for the past four years. Sullivan is acceptable to both Ryan and Clauer, ie is said.
