New District Attorney Says He’ll Have New York on Water Wagon in Sixty Days Ru Xt: A Serf ice I'.jEW YORK. March 12.—1 t took a minister’s son from l 1 1 J the mjddle west to put fur on the tongties of Manhattan's best drinkers. He is Emory R. Buckner, United States attorney for this* district, and hails from Hebron. Neb., and Guthrie, Okla. In his first week of office he began to padlock Broadway’s liveliest night clubs, got in some nasty cracks at bootleggers, protectionists, higher-ups, and private drinkers, and promises to have the whole city on a “pure water diet” in sixty days! Buckner’s methods may be accepted by federal prohibition authorities in a nation-wide prohibition clean-up. No more fines and freedom. Padlocks from now on. Buckner was born on an lowa farm and reared in a Methodist parsonage at Hebron. He learned stenography while teaching in the West, and through its practice earned his way through college* Three years as court stenographer in frontier courts trained Buckner In a law enforcement that was neither farcical nor grotesque, as he characterizes much prohibition enforcement. “The typewriter and congenital optimism carried me through col-
