HEW PARTY MAY RISE TO SOLVE BOOZE ISSUE -
State Senator Sees This as Possibility in Near Future.
Pr— —i REDICTIONS that a third great political party looms on i___J the horizon to solve the prohibition question, even as the Republican party was evolved to take a decisive staiffl on slavery is made by State Senator Chester A; Perkins, South Bend. Senator Perks Is a Democrat, and one of the four members of {he Upper House who voted against ti e Wright bone dry bill which *hInforce the present Indiana dry iawiv "I am Impatient with elected iepresentatives who can not vote their convictions," he said. "If the Indiana Senate hrfd voted as it drank, the bill would have been overwhelmingly defeated!" "Now, get me right. I am a dry. I think the old saloon was a terrible evil, andVm glad it is gone. I do not drink intoxicating liquor, but the time has come for some serious thought on this question. Pendulum Swings Far "The rebellion against the old saloon was the act of an outraged society to rid itself of an incubus that had become too arrogant to be tolerable. The cry for relief, seized by the fanatic theorists and fanned to a hysteria, was construed as in acceptance of prohibition* and before the reaction of califi Judgment could Intervene, our country was committed to a legislative act placed in our Constitution. “We hear a great deal about law enforcement. As an abstract principle, the people arc for law enforcement. However, they wish the law be visited upon themselves individually as little as possible. “We have a population paying executives to enforce the laws, and the same population paying bootleggers to violate the laws. This Is an anomoly that does not make for permanent satisfaction and peace. Rese'.tment will lie against those who fail to do what they are paid for, and thus our executive cannot fail to be discredited. Even now they are equally traduced foi strict or lax attempts, at law enforce -nent.”

Making It On High With A Used Car >* There is just as much power under the hood of a good used car as in a shiny new one. The difference is mostly in the price with maybe a little allowance on looks—but service, after all, is what we get from a car. JT you are considering buying a used car this spring, turn to Page 10 and read some of the wonderful bargains on used cars. SENATOR C. A. PERKINS
“The so-called bone dry bill, recently passed by the Indiana General Assembly, complicates rather than ameliorates the condition. It is not a spontaneous expression of the wishes of the people, which all sumptuary legislation should be. “ ‘Go thou and sin no more’ will get much farther than ‘Thou shalt not" in Indiana. "Preceding the Civil War the two great parties, with brazen hypocrisy, persistently dodged the slavery question until a determined people, leaving them grovelling in their iniquity, created anew vehicle of expression, the Republican party, which wrote the destinies of the country, with slight exception, for fifty years. "I can see history repeating itself. “Both the old parties have studiously dodged the prohibition question. but if one of them does not hearken to the signs of the times and take up the cause of the people, and offer relief from restrictions to liberty that are being forged by misguided fanatics, we will see both the present parties unceremoniously shelved and witness the birth of a new party. The potentialities are here, and only wait responsible leadership."
