Pink Pills Inspires a Sick Man to Bea Bold Bad Man With a Punch

By WALTER D. HIOKMAN aF Jack Dempsey ever loses his punch all he has to do Is to ! get hold of the little pink pills that Henry Williams uses In “The Nervous Wreck." 1 These little pills are wonders. Don’t know just how they act, but I Henry explains that each little pill I contains good and bad germs. When said germs get inside a fellow, the germs stage a battle, and if the good germs win—draw your own conclusion. Something put a 1 lot of pep and bravery In Henry Williams. Henry thought he was a m’ghty sick man. All he did was '.o eat , big meals, sleep like a horse a . night and in the meantime think that he was a weak and sickly fellow. But the pills did the work. Henry suddenly became more than “awee. 1 Henry” but turned out to be a bandit (comedy bandit) and a bold, bad man who used a gun to a good purpose. This Is Just the comedy background to “The Nervous Wreck,” a comedy which ran for 261 performances in New York with Otto Kruger as Henry Williams. Kruger Is playing the same comedy role in “The Nervous Wreck” v hlch opened a three-day engagement Thursday at English’s. Kruj:er really plays a game in this '.how. He seema personally to get a whale of a lot of fun doing the rough stuff in this comedy. He hasn't grown stale with his long association with the part. His spirit of good fun is passed on to every mber of the company. They all game as If it wa3 bully fun, and it is just that. “The Nsrvous Wrack” has been a oomedy success over since it opened In Now York on Tuesday evening, Oct. 29, 1923. Kruger has a comedy role which is different. He is sup- } posed to be a sick man who has only three months to live. His nerves are such a nature that he even holds up an automobile riarty to get five gallon of gasoline to fill the exhausted tank of his flivver. This gets him into all kinds of trouble but the little pink pills pull him through to success and even to the marriage altar which happens to be a table in this comedy. At times this comedy is pure hokum, rough and full of speed, but a sort of roughness which is Jolly fun. It has ail the elements which makes a comedy a success on the Btage. Kruger is giving a comedy characterization, which is the real article. If you don’t laugh at Kruger It is time you sample his pink pills with the two kind of germs. Jean May as Sally Morgan, leading woman, has that cute and yet lincere way about her which makes her the right kind of a fun companion for Kruger. Her work has that gentle comedy touch which distinguishes artistry from Just one wfio tries to act. Albert Hackett, Betty Harde, Wll-i Ham H. Barnwald, Clifford Hall,

Charles Henderson, Edw'-rd Arnold, Lawrence Eddlnger and Jefferson Hall make up a mighty competent comedy cast. “The Nervous Wreck” has been a long time reaching us, but it is now in splendid shape. A comedy that hands out the real laughs. I recommend it as mighty good entertainment. -I- -I- -!- HERE IS A VARIETY REVUE THAT IS A REVUE It is a hard Job these days to frame up a Jazz band revue that has novelty. The Capman boys and their Fashionettes have done that little trick in their revue. The boys first appear as rubes telling and singing about the wonders of their Main St. band. The girls, dressed as ancient hicks, appear, and are introduced. Then into full stage with the girls drissed in eccentric costumes. They make a pleasing jazz orchestra. The Capmar.s do a number of mighty good eccentrio dance numbers, especially the so-called cadet Stage Verdict “The Nervous Wreck”—A corking good comedy with Otto Kruger registering a genuine success. Have lio fear in recommending this one. At Engllsh’s. * Palace—Two acts have an easy way to victory on the new bill. The winners are the Capman Boys and their Fasionettes, a revue with real ideas, and Jerry Mack, in an eccentrio characterization.

and Chinese number. The boys are light on their feet. They are good showmen. Thoir work, that is the entire act, overshadows everything on the current bill at the Palace. Jerry Mack is an impersonator of an odd type of female. His work is remembered from another season when he was seen in “An Old Laxly Who Lived in the Shoe” act. His company is much smaller this time but Mack has a good chance to put over his eccentrio fun. The remainder of the vaudeville bill is just so so. Ed Allen and Taxi, a dog, work slowly. Wilkins and Wilkins have poor material with some poor delivery. Babb, Syrell and Lorraine offer a dancing act in which the acrbbatlo work of one of the girls Is the feature. Her work is good. The movie feature is Viola Dana In “The Prize Beauty.” •I* -I- -I6ther theaters today offer: "Moonlight” at the MuiCt; Mme. Benson In “Smarty’s Party” at Keith’s; Nellie V. Nichols at the Lyric; “New Toys” at the Circle; "Married Flirts” at the Apollo; "The Thundering Herd” at the Ohio and "My Husband’s Wives” with Shirley Mason at the Isis.
