TWO IN DIVORCE PLOT SENTENCED . . ( Jailed for Poking as Man and Wife in Court, Bu United Press CHICAGO, March 6.—A man and a woman today started serving jail sentences because, they “perjured for love." James Grlppando and Mrs. Helen Frederick were apprehended by Judge Joseph Sabath in an attempt to obtain a fake divorce. They testified tjiey were Mr. and Mrs. Grippando and told of domestic trouble that necessitated a separation. But Judge Sabath investigated and found that Grlppando and Mrs. Frederick were not married, but were In love and wanted to be free to marry each other. Because the true Mrs. Grippando pleaded for mercy for her husband Judge Sabath made the sentences light—ten days for Mps. B'rederick and thirty days for Grippando.

Niedenfuhr, sales manager for a large Chicago hardware firm. Niedenfuhr came to America from Hungary eleven years ago. Although master of five languages, he didn’t know a word of English. “I suw a cross-word puzzle in a New York newspaper shortly after my arrival,” he said. "It recalled to my mind my college days in Prassburg. Hungary. "Cross-word puzzles were then a great help to me in learning the French and German languages, so I immediately set to work on the puzzles. "I attribute whatever success I have attained to the fact that I recognized the value of cross-word puzzles. “They are the surest means of increasing a man’s vocabulary. And when a man has mastered the languages,” he declared, “he has established the ground work for success. “But there’s nothing new about them,” he asserted. “I worked cross-word puzzles during my high school days in Hungary, as far back as 1904.” Niedenfuhr is a graduate of the University of Prassburg. He served four years in the American Army as a first lieutenant in the field artillery.
