50,000 HENS, BUT NO ROOSTERS ON GREATEST RAN! Owner Confesses He Doesn't Know What It's All About, By PHILIP SINNOTT NEA Service Writer PETALUMA, Cal., March s.—Fifty thousand chickens! And you never hear a roo*tr crow on the place; Never see a mother hen digflnf up a worm for baby chicks. A ‘hennery” pure and simple, i the Corliss Ranch here. It is said to be th** greatest egg-producing farm in the world. At least 30,000 cackles are heard a day—and each cackle means an egg. Packed thirty dozen In a case, a truck is required to move seventy or more cases a day to the poultry exchange for shipment. Just a Trader You’d expect the head of this farm to be a past master at “chickenology,” specialist in poultry diseases. poultry breeding, cross-breed-ing, historic strains, trap nests and 'the rest of the things that bother the beginner in chicken raising. But Frank W. Corliss, the proprietor, assures you that he doesn't pretend to know what It is all about. ‘‘Getting chickens Is Just tiJt* trading horses with me,” he s&y^M ‘‘Every spring I’m in the to sell about 8,000 hens and to buy 10,000 pullets. I scout around to find where I can sell my hens for the highest price, and then I haggle around until I get my pullets at the lowest price. ‘‘We’re too busy feeding chickens and gathering and packing eggs to bother about trying to run setting hens or lncub*tors. So it’s easier to buy than worry. $70,000 Feed BUI ’’l was 'a machinist before I thought I could get rich in the poultry game, and it’s bad enough to worry about the $70,000 feed bill I must dig up every year, without worrying about little chickens. I’d rather count mine after some one else hatches ’em. “Advice to other poultrymen?* Say, advice durn near ruined me. Some figures, then? Gotcha pencil and paper ready?” Here they are; Four men and two women kept busy gathering eggs in 200-egg buckets and packing them for market. Forty-six acres in hens—approximately 1,000 hens to an acre. White Leghorn strain used entirely. Hens rire kept three years, then sold. HSach lot shows a loss, of 20 per cent during the three years, due to pleurisy and loss of vitality due to the breeding to produce hens laying 200 eggs a year. Big Eaters Truck load of kale bought every* day and ton of alfalfa and en daily. Twenty sacks of wet fed daily—maize, shredded and rolled oats, mixed by electric machinery. Ten sacks of onions fed daily occasionally as tonic. Many tons of barley and wheat fed weekly. Over 330 chicken houses, thirty with electric lights to make working day longer. Over forty-eight different poultry yards. Three power pumps connected to three wells, needed to supply water. Twenty storage houses for chicken feed.
CHANNEL TUNNEL AGAINDISCUSSED Trade Conference to Hear Plans in April. Bv Time* Bvrcial PARIS, March f.—Suggested a century ago and often discussed but postponed because of international diiiiouJties. the problem of constructing a Channel tunnel will come up again at the International Trad* Conference in Rome in April. M. Le Troequer, noted engineer has given to the parliamentary committee, a detailed report on problem. The idea of a tunnel under the strip of water between England anil Prance, was broached seriously about fifty or sixty years ago by thp Franco-British Association for the Promotion of Peace. But FrancoBritlsh relations were never very cordial until King Edward developed .the entente, which finally became a wartime alliance, and so the plans never went beyond the state of pre’lmlnary discussion. In the last twenty years, however, the scheme has made headway and committees have been working on the plans in Paris, London and Brussels. It is not. likely that anybody will revive the old objections based on the case with which a continental army could - invade England through the tunnel. With that objection out of tlje way the chances of putting through the plan are good. Oldest Harvard Grad CAMBRIDGE, kass., March s.—The oldest living graduate of Harvard is George A. Peabody, 93, of Dapvers. Mass. He was graduate with the class of 1852. Dr. Charles Wj. Eliot, president emeritus, graduated in 1853. He also is 93.
