ELKS SWELL FUND FOR MINER AID Relief Sum Now Reported at $8,523,04, Funds raised by the Indianapolis Chapter, American Red Cross, for sufferers of the Sulivan mine disaster, amounted to $8,523.04 today. Miss Agnes Cruse, secretary, announced. Among the contributions was SIOO from Indianapolis Elks, lodge No. 13 The sum of $146 was sent by the International Brotherhood of Painters, Decorators and Paperhangers at Lafayette to headquarters of the United Mine Workers of America here. This amount, together with $145 collected from office employes at headquarters was forwarded to William Hitch, secretary of District 11, Terre Haute. Various funds raised in Indianapolis amounted to more than $26,000. PROWLER GETS AWAY Shots Fail to Stop Escape From Brass Foundry. Warned by an alarm set off when 4 ' sMe window was broken in the F. H. Langsenkamp brass foundry, 130 E. Georgia St., at midnight Tuesday, William Montgomery and Stewart Coleman of the American District Telegraph Agency burglar alarm system fired three shots at a man who ran out of the back door. The Intruder escaped. Nothing was disturbed in the foundry. * O. Wormer, 3680 Central Ave., reported a woman’s gold wrist watch, set with a diamond, and a ring, both valued at S7OO, stolen from his home. Guy Lemon. 4901 Washington Blvd., reported silverware, a fur piece and a coat, all valued at $240, stolen. AUTO ROBBERY SETTING Ohio Man Forced Into Car By Hold-Up Men. Police today had only a meager description of two armed men who forced John M. Underwood, Marietta, Ohio, into their automobile as he alighted from a street car at TwentyFirst and Illinois Sts., Tuesday night and robbed him as they drove around. Underwood, who Is at Ft. Harrison preparatory to entering West Point, reported his loss as S3O, a. woman’s watch engraved with the name ‘‘Henrietta,” and another watch, a gold chain and a Boy Scout charm valued at S3O, Mrs. George Willis, 1435 Bellefontaine 3t., told police a man grabbed her purse, containing SB, as she was walking in Fourteenth St. near Ashland Ave. I

Alabama St., could not obtain the services of a physician to come to their home and treat their 3-months-old baby, Capt. Fred Drinkut sent a city dispensary doctor. The Davis family said they had a doctor for five days, but he was called from the city and when they attempted to get another all refused to come. The child became worse and the police call resulted. Heinl picked the radio outfit, and this afternoon in the presence of the Hoosiers who came to Washington to witness the inauguration, the Hoosier congressional delegation and the White House stafT, Saunders was duly surprised. Representative Noble Johnson of Terre Haute who succeeds Saunders in the House made the speech of presentation.

Traced to the home of his sister, near his home in Eaglesfleld, Ind., Charles Scott, 21, was arrested by Sheriff C. T. Bolsourt of Decatur County and returned here Tuesday to face charges of robbery and assault and battery with intent to kill. Scott denied, detectives said, that he struck his grandfather, Howard Scott, 84, of 2829 Burton Ave., on the head with an iron bar nad robbed him of $5 F*b. 20. Instead he offered his aid in apprehending the guilty person. The aged man is in a critical condition, police said.

SPEEDING IS BLAMED Eden Man Slated Following Crash at Downtown Corner. Floyd Umbenhower, 21, of Eden, Ind., was slated on speeding and improper driving charges, following an auto accident at New York and' Alabama Sts. Tuesday night. Police say he said he was driving only twenty miles an hour when he struck an auto driven by Mrs. Marie Hesler, 28, of 34 N. Addison St. Both cars were damaged. Police say Harry Dietz, 375 S. Gray St., skidded forty feet in his auto before it struck the front wheel on a Red Ball bus, driven by Edward Kelly, 525 Concord St., at Senate Ave. and Washington St. DECISION IS HELD UP Re-Zoning of Meridian St. Taken Under Advisement. Decision on requests of George J. Marott and E. G. Thomas Abbott Mott, for twelve years superintendent of the Seymour public schools, %as resigned, effective at the end of the present school year. He came here from Richmond and has been public school superintendent for thirtyeight years and in public school work for forty-eight years. Norman J. Lesher, superintendent of the Gas City (Ind.) schools, has been elected to succeed him here.
OAKLANDON KEEPS DEPOT Big Four’s Petition to Abandon Station Denied. Public service commission today denied the petition of the Big Four Railroad Company for authority to abandon their station at Oaklandon. Petition stated that expense of maintaining the station out of proportion with tho amount of business handled. Commissioners ruled that - the station was necessary because Sunnyside Sanatorium was. nearby and that the population of Oaklandon was increasing. The railroad wished to establish a station at McCordsville, three miles east of Oaklandon. TROTSKY SEEKS PEACE Former Soviet Minister Negotiates With Communists.
