PRE-LENT SEASON ENDS IN GAYETY OF ARTISTS’ BALL More Than 500 Attend Mardi Gras at John Herron Institute. The gayest of carnival spirits prevailed Tuesday evening at the last pre-Lenten bkll, the Mardi Gras, given by the Indiana Artists Club In the sculpture court of John Herron Art Institute. The ball, attended by more than 500 persons, was a successful an . fitting close to a season of delightful affairs. Carl Graf, carnival king, chose Miss Mildred Leonard as queen, and with her led the grand march. The costumes were bizarre, beautiful and original. For the few hours of the ball the stately figures of sculpture forgot thedr dignity and added to the gayety. Even the huge, sober war horse, bedecked with carnival streamers and flecked with confetti, appeared to be lifting his great hoof in joyous time with the music. Over the dancers vari-colored lights played from time to time. Features of the evening included a comic bull fight between two elaboEly dressed matodors and a papierhe bull. le fighters, Dr. and Mrs. Julio per, wore Spanish costumes, in color and trimmings, and Jose Gonzales Nssones, dressed In a sheet and the bull head, played his part well. Two comic policemen finally removed from the scene a riotously happy “drunk,” and an exaggerated dance was given by a young man in evening clothes. The hall was filled with brightlycolored drifting balloons. Mrs. Albert I. Dugan was general chairman. ROTARIANS START HOME Next Year’s Convention Oily Up to Committee. LETTER FROM RUTH BURKE TO WALTER BURKE, CONTINUED. Few women, my dear Walter, can face facts. When a womaji finds her Ideal shattered if she is not big enough to recognize that the blame Is not wholly her husband’s—and few women are big enough—she Is lost. Dear, don’t laugh at me when I tell you that probably this is why the tradition Js grown up that widows make the best wives. You sea, widows have gone through all this shattering of Ideals. They know what to expect and as a rule they expect mighty little of a man. Consequently they are surprised and delighted at the slightest conformity in the man they have married to that which they wish their husbandß were. There, dear, I am hearing you laugh long and loud. You’ll have to acknowledge that it is true. You know I am a splendid' wife and I was a widow. You know how happy I am when you do something that is in the nature of unselfishness. Besides this l am glad you are able to laugh at a taith. Most truths either make people fighting mad or very weepy. Leslie’s baby is a fine one, they say. Between you and me, I think new babies are very ugly, with their uncertain colored eyes, their little button noses, their s’obbery mouths, their bald heads am', their red skins. If one could see the potentialities and if one did. not apptcciate its helplessness, no one would think a new baby was pretty. A new-born puppy or a newhatched chicken are much nicer to look at. I wish, however, you could see little Jack holding that bundle of lace and flannel which encases his

"Buddy.” It would prove a thrill to you. Already Leslie Is making Jack understand that his responsibility for his little brother is limitless. Zoe Ellington is growing very beaut fit.'. in many ways she reminds mo of Harry. She makes friends Just as easily and throws them off as quickly as she finds one she l?ke' better. Up to date she has only shown this characteristic in regard to the young men who hover about her. She Is a perfect little flirt. I am afraid that Leslie will not keep her long as already a number of the young men about the hotel are her devoted slaves arid shower on her a great deal of attention. A That this attention should be of the right kind, I have taken her to some of the tea and dinner dances, and explained to some of the older women that Zoe Is a kind of relation of mine. I have said that as she wanted to be independent after her magnificent education abroad, I had plaoed her with Txtslie as .half governess to her children and half companion to herself. This, of course, makes her place with Leslie a kind of a family affair. and sets her right with all the snobs. (Copyright, 1926, NEA Service, Inc.) Next; This letter concluded. Marriage Needs Firm Financial Foundation
A house that is built on a firm foundation need not fear storms that would wreck houses of weaker materials. So it is with that qaost important house—the house of marriage.
First comes the most vital part of the foundation. This, of course, is love. It must be followed with tolerance, mutual respect of rights and possessions, and sound finances. The financial side of marriage Is not romantic. Sonnets ne’er were written about how to pay the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker and still have enough left for the automobile salesman, the radio agent and the florist. The finance rock, nevertheless, is one of the most important in the foundaticn of the house of marriage. The rest of the foundation depends upon It. Werut i Is not essential to make a house of marriage withstand storms. But a firm business foundation Is. A little capital and a lot of common sense will go far to save the hi use.

No Money Saved Dear Mian Lee; I have just been married and neither my husband nor I has saved any money. I should like for you to rive us some advice on how to atari buying furniture for our home. H. O. A. Put yourselves on a budget, and stick to it. You will need good management to keep off the financial rocks. Get along with as little furniture as possible, at first, and buy good pieces, rather than fill your home with cheap stuff. If you are clever at shopping you may be able to pick up some things at secondhand places and have them renovated or use them as they are. Would-Be Author Dear Miss Lee: I want to know what one should say In writing to a publisher about a story. I am a young girl and can writs very nice stories—or I think I can. I wrote many letters to send with a story, but they did not read like the light kind to send. I will be so thankful if you will please write what I should say The story Is very nice and I think it will be what they would like. I thought I could earn somt money this way—or do they j>ay for a good story brio™ S Most magazines pay for accepted stories before publication, but E. D. E., don't count too mu?h on making money this way; the road to fame as an author is a hard one, usually, and a long one. Your letter Indicates that you could study to good advantage to obtain greater ease of expression and better grammar.
