STATE‘PROBERS’ PRAISE TRUSTEES OF REFORMATORY Legislative Investigation Mayjße Extended' to PrisonInvestigation of the affairs of the Indiana State Reformatory at Pendleton, scheduled to end tonight, has lesulted in finding absolutely no criminal offense nor anything in the nature of graft on the part of the board of trustees or any of the officials, a, member of the legislative investigating committee declared today. It was learned, however, that the reformatory probe was likely to be extended to the board of trustees nt the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City. Strong business interests and certain political groups were bringing pressure to bear upon the Governor to displace Warden E. J. Fofarty and the prison board, It was learned, on the grounds that contracts let for the sale of prison-made products were inimical to certain classes of businesses and to organized labor. Contracts Profitable The legislative Probe Committee found contracts let for the sale of w irk shirts, hollow iVon ware and other products of the reformatory profitable to the State, committee members said. A dozen witnesses were slated to appear before the committee in the reformatory investigation today. Eleven witnesses were examined Thursday. * Vlf the reformatory is given money enough to build a hospital, school, dormitory and completo its cell block and I think It the sense of the budget committee that we grant this additional appropriation—the reformatory will be more than self-sustaining,” Representative J. Glenn Harris, Gary, member of the probe committee, said today. It was said the investigation was likely to result in suggestion that a building superintendent be named by the Governor to complete construction of the buildings: Bert Souders, farm manager of the reformatory, it is said, is Governor Jackson’s choice to succeed A. F. Miles as superintendent. Souders Is a native of Hendricks County and a close friend of the Governor. Jackson set a precendent for elevating farm managers to superintendenoy of State institutions when he named his brother James farm manager at the School for Feeble Minded at Ft. Wayhe to be superintendent. Only Commendation Harris said the committe had heard of no action being taken to probe the State Prison affairs, and that he had heard nothing but commendation for administration of the prison. There has been, however, considerable agitation, backed by labor groups, to prohibit the sale of prisonmade goods without "prison made” labels, he admitted. At the State Prison contracts for prison-made goods are made for the output of the prison factories, direct, while at the Reformatory products are made under the prison contract system. Fibre furniture, shirts, brooms, binder twine, shoes, tin ware, hollow iron ware and other products are manufactured at the Institutions. "We are running down every rumor concerning the reformatory, and 'thus far have found nothing, but vindication for the trustees,” a member of the committee said. About Face Harris’ declarations about the reformatory directly contrary to statements a few days ago, when he declared any one of the charges of gross extravagance, Inefficiency or mal-conduct could be brought against the trustees. The Gary representative said probe of the State highway commission would be taken up Saturday. He declared as far as he was concerned, no probe of the public service commission would be made. “In fact, I think the public service commission would find favor in the eyes of this committee,” he said. SENATE APPROVES JEW VOTE LAWS Bill Embodying Changes Sent to House. Changes in the election laws, suggested by events in recent elections, are embodied in Senator Quillin’s administration bill, which passed the Senate today and went to the House. The bill provides: Precincts where voting machines are used shall be limited to 600 voters, and where Australian ballots are used to 250. Some Marion County precincts in the last election had 1,900 voters registered. Voters are limited to one minute voting by machine and three by pencil. No limit is now specified. Pay of precinct inspector sl2, clerks and judges $9 and sheriffs $6 for the election. They are now paid by the day. This is to speed them up.
