ATTEMPTED GAS ROBBERY FOILED piquor Runners Suspected by Attendant. v Police failed to find any trace of -three men, thought to be liquor -.runners, who attempted to get five igallons of gasoline free Thursday night. - Henry Diener, attendant at the SilVer Flash station at La Salle and Michigan Sts., told police two of the men went inside the station and ’ down the shade. Suspicious, Diener got his gun. When the man who remained outside started to get back into the car without paying, Diener pulled the gun. The man -paid. Diener said there were eight fivegallon cans in the back of the auto. As Mike Alboher, 1022 S. Capitol Ave., fruit peddler, started to make change for a colored youth to whom he sold a nickel’s worth of apples, the youth struck him over the eye with a rock, and ran with the money, amounting to about 60 cents. SPEED COPS TAKE EIGHT One Driver Also Charged With Assault and Battery. Eight alleged speeders were slated late Thursday and early today. They gave their names as: Elmer Raeburn, 36, of 3132 Kenwood Ave.; •Sylvester Farmer, 31, colored, 313 B'oledo St.; Chris Greiner, 26, of 6116 rjij. North St.{ Sam Strange, 26, colored, N. Arsenal Ave.; Fred Blaydes, 21*of 4341 Royal Ave.; Raymond Jenkins, 22, Troy and Dexter Aves.; Edgar Zumpfe, 21, of 221 N. State Ave. Roy Spickelmeyer, 21, of 22 Lyons Ave., is charged with speeding and assault and battery. DUNPHY IS ADVANCED Made Secretary of Trade Committee of C. of C. John B. Reynolds, general secretary of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, today announced the appointment of Clifford G. Dunphy as secretary of the wholesale trade, the foreign trade and the retail trade committees to succeed Earl L. Ferguson, who has served in that capacity for the past four years. Ferguson has been obliged to sever his connections with those committees because of the increase in the work of the convention bureau, of which he is manager. Dunphy has been assistant secretary under Ferguson for almost a year. MRS. HERMAN DIES Wife of Proprietor of Downtown Picture Shop Succumbs. Carrie A. Herman, 62, wife He B. H. Herman, who operates a shop at 120 N. Pennsylvania St., died at her home at Apt. 43, 402 N. Meridian St., early today. M.-s. Herman was more, Md., and came to Indianapolis In 1890. Funeral arrangements have nee been made. $15,000 HOME BOUGHT T. E. Setmler Purchases Residence In Woodruff Place. Lawrence J. Sexton, realtor, has announced the sale of a two-story residence at Michigan St. and Middle Dr., Woodruff Place, owned by the Marlon Building and Investment to Thomas E. Selmler of the Frank Selmler Towel Supply Company. Consideration was $16,000.

CONFER ON ELEVATION Belt Railroad Officers Meet With Board of Works. Members of the board of works, officials of the Indianapolis Union Railway Company, and H. G. Wray, city track elevation engineer, conferred today on track elevation plans for the southeastern part of the city. The city has been insisting for some time that the company complete plans for the work. HOUSE HEARS HANDING Former Governor Pleads lor Great Lake*-St. Lawrence Project. “At the present time the Argentine farmer with his 8,000-mile haul is nearer to the New England market than the lowa or the Indiana farmer,’’ said former Governor Harding of lowa in an address before the Indiana House of Representatives today. Governor Harding spoke in the Interest of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Tidewater project which, he said, embraced the simple problem of digging deeper and wider, flftyedght miles of canal. The budget contains an appropriation of $5,000 for the waterway. BURIAL IN CROWN HILL Funeral of Mrs. Dalton to Be Held Saturday. Mrs. Rachel Dalton, 66, who died Thursday at home of her son, Rudolph Dalton, 921 Hamilton Ave., will be burled in Crown Hill Cemetery following funeral services at 2:30 p. m. Saturday at the residence. Mrs. Dalton was a member of the East Tenth Street M. E. church and Women’s Benefit Association. K. OF C. CLUB ELECTS Thomas 8. Markey New President s os Luncheon Society. Headlights Cause Arrest Bv Timea Special GOSHEN, Ind., Feb. 20.—Daniel B. Fox of Ft. Wayne was under arrest today in connection with the fatal Injury of Simon P. Hooley,' 69, who was struck by an automobile driven by an unidentified driver who failed to stop. Arrest followed after Fox and George Miller cf Indianapolis, who was with him, stopped at a garage to have headlights on the auto repaired. Railroad Loses Suit State Appellate Court today affirmed Marlon Superior Court in awarding SSOO damages to Carrie B. Watson against the Pennsylvania, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Ruil road for property damage in a flood along Eagle Creek several years ago. Complaint charged the rail road was negligent in maintaining a bridge that caused flood waters to overflow nearby land.
