FEATURE BASKET GAMES AT ‘EXPO’ BUILDING TONIGHT AND SATURDAY

De Pauw Battles Butler in Rivalry College Fray—Famous Vincennes Five Here Tomorrow. The center of basketball activity has moved north in this city. Tomlinson Hall, that much-maligned, battle-scarred relic of many a desperate net battle, is almost forgotten as the fans swarm out to the Exposition building, State fairground. And. the netters are surely making the most of the new accommodations.

Two big games are on the program this week-end. Butler College and De Pauw clash tonight and on Saturday the much-touted Vincennes High School team meets Technical. Butler wants that De Pauw scalp very much tonight. The Irvington -club, playing its final home game of the season, desires to end things in a blaze of glory. Wants Some Backets* Butler still has another shot at Franklin and Wabash and does not consider itself entirely out of the picture by a long shot. Butler has shown great defensive power throughout the year, but has .rot been able to find the net. TJie Blue and White team hopes to snag a few tonight. On the other hand De Pauw is pepped for a battle. The tle club has some fine nettens with speed aplenty. They believe they can set the locals down. A number of rooters will follow the team here. Another Crowd On Saturday night andfher huge crowd is expected at the new playing court when Vincennes High shows its stuff, lech, with its enrollment of 5,000 students, can fill Up a large number of those seats and there Is considerable interest among local fans not connected with the achool. Everyone wants a slant at the Alices of Old Vincennes. The club Is rated among the State’s best prep outfits and the basketball followers want to see with their own eyes. Bu United Press , t NEW YORK, Feb. 20.—“1f I could be a major league baseball catcher and the pocket billiard champion, I’d be completely satisfied,” Willie Hoppe, world cue wizard, said here before leaving for Chicago.

Hoppe, who has held the balkline billiard championship for years almost beyond court, added more glory to his career when he defeated Bob Cannefax, world’s three-cushion champion, Thursday night In the final block of a ten-block match by the score of 600 to 654. The balk-line champion won the ninth block by a score of 60 to 44 and captured the final, 60 to 61. Cannefax’s title was not at stake, but Hoppe was satisfied with a win over a recognized champion. “Maybe I’ll go after the pocket billiard championship some time, but not right now,” Hoppe said. “I have always wanted to hold the three major cue titles since I started playing billiards. First of all, though, I wanted to be a big league catcher. It was my first and greatest ambition, -and when I found I couldn’t make the grade, I turned to billiards.” Hoppe left for Chicago, where he will defend his balkline championship in a tournament starting Monday. By United Press NEW YORK, Feb. 20.—Tom Gibbons, St. Paul heavyweight, was to be offered as a challenger for the heavyweight championship by Eddie Kane, his manager here today. Kane announced he would post a $2,600 forfeit if he learned after a conference with the New York boxing commission that a challenge will be considered. Kane said he wanted to learn if a challenge would interfere with any plans of the commission. Oho, Feb. 20,—Plans for building an arena for basketball and other indoor athletics by temporarily enclosing one end of Ohio stadium were announced today by W. L. St. John, director of athletics at Ohio State University. For want of an adequate place on the campus, Ohio State Indoor events for many years have been held in the coliseum at State fairground. St. John’s visionary arena would seat 20,000 spectators. K. C.’s at Shelbyville Bu Times Bvecial SHELBYVILLE, Ind., Feb. 20. The Ft. Wayne K. C. basketball team, considered the leading pro team of the State, will play the Shelbyville Eagles here on March 2. The Ft. Wayne team defeated the locals earlier in the season.

STATE FAIR GOERS GET HARNESS RACING TREAT Grand Circuit Meet to Be Held Here in September—This City Awarded Hartford’s Dates. Grand Circuit harness racing will be held in Indianapolis this year at the State fair, Sept. 7to 12. E. J. Barker, secre-tary-treasurer of the State board of agriculture, accepted the proposal of Win H. Kinnan, secretary of the Grand Circuit, and “big league” racing has returned to this city after many years.

Indianapolis gots its chance to play host to famous horses and drivers because Hartford (Conn.) withdrew from the circuit. Readville (Mass.) also gave up its place after Hartford’s decision and Milwaukee took those dates. AMATEUR WIND-UP TUESDAY Prestos and Pennsys Meet In Sectional Net Title Fracas. Prest-O-Lites and Pennsy Railroad fives will meet next Tuesday night for the local independent amateur basketball title at the Y. M. C. A. floor. On Thursday night in the semi-finals at the “Y” the Prestos, with subs In the line-up, won from First Baptist, 32 i.o 20, and the Pennsy club had no difficulty In defeating the Christamores, 32 to 18. It looks very much as though the Prest-O-Llte aggregation would represent this city In the State finals which will be held here, Feb. 26, 27 ind 28.
