NEW RADIO PATENTS
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—Patents on eight new radio inventions were granted by the United States Patent Offlce during the past week. A brief description of these new inventions follows: * Direct reading radio telegraphic compass (No. 1,525.177), Invented by Robert B. Goldschmidt and Raymond Braillard of Parte, France. This invention enables the measurement of radio signals to be made Instantaneously and automatically and reduces the finding of the azimuth to a simple reading of a graduated circle. Crystkl detector (No. 1,525,159), Invented by Henry M. Wohlman and Max Harschfeld of Brooklyn, N. Y. The principal object of this Invention is to permit the replacement of old crystals with new ones. Electron-discharge tube (No. 1,525,049), Invented by Samuel Ruben of New York, N. Y. The object of this invention is to provide an efficient low cost means for detecting and amplifying received radio frequency oscillations. Vario coupler (No. 1.524.976), Invented by Charles w. Kautz of Lancaster, Pa. The primary object of Radiograms There are 60,000 radio receiving sets now in use In Australia’. In Germany, all who do not pay the government tax on receiving sets are called “black listeners.” One hour a day of a national radio program, interconnected over the whole country under some independent direction has been suggested by Herbert C. Hoover. One hundred and twenty-five broadcasting stations are 'assisting the United States weather bureau in the transmission of weather forecasts, storm and flood warnings and special forecasts for orch&rdists and beekeepers. A bill has beer. Introduced In the Legislature of Connecticut to prohibit .“emitting any noise or other disturbance which deliberately interferes with broadcasting of concerts and other programs between the hours of 6 p. m.-and 12 p. m. The Union College Radio Club of Schenectady, N. Y., recently announced, for record, development of a radio wavelength of only 3.8 meters. It was said the lowest recorded wavelength previous was 7 meters. Care of Headphones Headphones that have been in service for a year or more should be inspected by removing the "Sap and diaphragm. The mounting screws holding the horseshoe magnet In place should be tightened. Remove any dirt or particles of steel that may be collecting on pole pieces. The diaphragh should be inspected to ascertain If it has become bent and if so, it should be replaced with anew one. The screws holding the telephone cord tips should be tightened, but not removed and reversed, as this will disturb the polarity of the unit, affecting signals. If the diaphragm has become weakened and touches the pole pieces it shbuld be.turned over on its reverse side which will correct the trouble. Copper Wire Uses Use No. i 4 coper wire in a hookup when you have no bus bar. Copper wire will give as good or better results, but it is more likely to tarnish. this Invention is to provide means by which the inductance of the primary windings may be varied without the necessity of mounting contact studs upon a panel board. Vacuum spark gap (No. 1,525,356). invented by Harry Zuckerman of New york, N. Y. Some of the objects of this Invention are: to make provision for more scientifically maintaining the adjustment of spark gap; to more thoroughly provide for the installation of the device as a part of a wireless system. Remotely controlled selective system (No. 1,525,431), Invented by Thomas H. Phillips Jr., of Brooklyn, N. Y.. and assigned to Elmer A. Sperry of Brooklyn. This invention relates to the selective control of translating devices from a distance by means of a minimum number of line wires or by radiant energy. Method and apparatus for electrically operating tuning forks (No. 1,524.868), invented by Lloyd M. Knoll of Philadelphia, Pa. The principal object of this invention is to provide a simple and improved mians of securing constancy of frequency when minute time intervals of precise duration are desired for precision measurements and other purposes. Audiofrequency selective signaling system (No. 1,525,110), invented by Frederick K. Vreeland of Montclair, N. J. This invention provides for increased efficiency In apparatus adapted to the elimination of strays of sudden impulsive character. (Copyright, 1925, by Stevenson Radio Syndicate)

. For the Notebook When charging a battery, disconnect It from the set. A9 loop aerial does not require a ground connection. Audio amplifiers build up the volume, but not the distance. Cold waves increase the power of radio signals to more than twice their normal strength. Batteries are the source of supply* of a set. Learn to conserve them, which means low upkeep. Merely chipping the surface of a crystal will present anew surface, and give virtually anew mineral. To span great (Usances with a loop receiver, it is necessary to use from five to eight tubes or more In a radio-frenquancy hook up or with a superhetrodyne.
