Averajr© price -of twenty rails was 99.44, off NEIV YORK, Feb. 14.—Pronounced irregularity characterized price movements in the general list at t'ae week-end. Baldwin and American Woolen were subjected to heavy selling by professionals operating on the theory that these stocks would be hurt by the poor showing which their forthcoming reports for 1924 are expected to make. Steel Common was also heavy most of the session and its behavior exercised a depressing influence on Crucible. Republic and other independent steels. Despite the action of these stocks, however, sufficient strong spdts were in evidence to demonstrate that the bull market was by no means over. American Can continued its impressive display of strength suggesting by Its steady advance into record territory that the split-up of present shares was only a question of time. Oil shares with General Petroleum as a leader made a good response to further crdue price increases. Maxwell Issues were features of in the motor group, while ■enthusiastic bullish demonstrations "were staged in International Paper, Western Union* and Dupont. The market closed lower. The offering was estimated at <i,500 and the holdover from was 177. Pigs were quoted unchanged at $6.50 @10.50. Sows were 10@15c higher at [email protected] for smooths and $9.85 @lO.lO for roughs. Sta fs brought $6 @9. * Total approximate receipts for the week were 39,979, v the lightest for some time. This compares with 51,416 the week before. Net gain in prices over Monday amounted to 40c on light lights, 35@40c on lightweights, 35c on medivms and 25@ 30c on heavyweights. Pigs were practically steady and sows gained 10c. Demand has been broad and trade active on light offer \gp. Little was done in cattle owing to meager supplies. The market for the week has .been on the decline, heavy stock losing the most. Unsettled conditions in the dressed beef trade was a discouraging factor and dealers are not anticipating any betterment in the live cattle market until the dressed trade Improves. Heavy cows were as much as 50@76c lower, and heavy Steers and heifers were off 25@ 50c. Light stock was down perhaps a quarter. Prices on eanners, cutters and bulls showed little change from the week’s opening. Veal prices were up 50c. Top was $14.50 and the bulk of good stock brought $13@14. Mediums were quoted at s9@ll and commons s6@B. The market not only regained ground lost in a sinking spell when orders slumped, but finished the week approximately $2 opening. Activity was at a low point during most of the week in the sheep and lamb department. Light receipts considerably hampered trade. Prices are practically steady with the exception of choice lambs, which, quoted at sl7, are sl. under last week’s close. Dealers still are quoting Chicago prices on good stock.
