Bv United Press NEW YORK, Feb. 13.— Initial trading on the Stock Exchange today was on an active scale induced "by the action of the New York Federal Reserve Bank in retaining the 3 per cent rediscount rate and increases in crude oil prices in practically every producing district esst pt the Rockies. Because of the latter development oil stocks made up -a goodly portion of the first transactions. A resumption of advance in sevMral issues served to steady the P|hole market in the late morning. Can continued its remarkable rise, reaching further record high at 176, while American Locomotive moved up more than 2 points to anew high on the present move at 121%. Maxwell Issues were the features of the motors, B was up 2%, to 441;%, on reports in brokerage circles that the was turning out cars at the rate of 400 daily and had more .than $10,000,000 cash on hand.

Top moved up to $11.40 and the bulk of the day’s transactions was at $11.25 per hundred pounds. Choice weighty butchers brought $11.30 @ 11.35; mediums and lights sold at $11.25; light yghts sold over a range of [email protected]. Pigs reflected the rise at $6.5(5 @10.50. light stock pigs were practically steady at $6.50 @7; Pigs, 110 to 150 pounds, were quoted at $7.50@10. Prices of sows advanced 25c. Good stock sold at [email protected] and lesser quality sold at [email protected]. Stags were steady at $6 @9. Receipts were estimated at 8,000 and the holdover was 400. A good clearance was reported. Cattle trade appeared to be about on the same basis as Thursday. Prices in the majority of cases were unchanged. Common plain killing steers were quoted at $6.75@7; choiec yearlings, $10; fair handyweights, [email protected]; mediums, [email protected]. Cows and heifers ruled unchanged on normal demand. Choice heavy cows sold at [email protected] and bulk brought s4@s. Veals opened 50c higher and gained an additional 50c later in the morning. Values eased off near the close. Top was sl4 and the bulk of good stuff sold at sl3 @13.50. Mediums were quoted at $9 @ll and commons sold at s6@B. Receipts wer> estimated at 600, Business increased with receipts in the sheep and lamb department.
