What do you think of this record. HOWARD B. COONS, North Vernon, Ind. Tuning in twenty-nine stations in three hours time with a single tube is a record that any one should be proud of. casting station that puts regular programs on the air? H. G. SUMMERS, Greenfield, Ind. The only station operating in Indianapolis at the present time is WBBZ, which is owned and operated by Noble Wat3on. This station Is at present broadcasting two programs a week, Sunday afternoon at 3 and Monday evening* at 8. Times Radio Editor: What has become of the Kansas City Night Hawks? I never hear them any more. ANXIOUS FAN. - The Night Hawks, are on the air every night at 11:45; the reason that you have failed to bear them lately may be due to the fact that this sation has changed Its wave lengths In the past few weeks. WDAF Is now operating on 365.6 meters in place of 411 meters. — FOR THE NOTEBOOK Added “B” battery voltage means louder signals. Final adjustments for weak signals are made with the rheostat. Merely tying a wire on a pipe does not make a ground connection. When using guys for the aerial, it is best to use wire, because rope shrinks and stretches. The more “C” battery used, the more the plate current will be cut down and the life of the "B” battery prolonged. An instrument making possible the elimination as “listeners-in” of all radio owners who have not leased the device, has bean perfected. Sometimes amplifiers may be used successfully to receive a weak signal through "heavy static by reducing the size of the aerial or by the use of a loop. _ To Isnen Interference Interference from local broadcasting stations can be decreased In many cases by shunting a fixed condenser across the aerial and ground binding posts. This type of condenser may be made with two sheets of tin foil three inches square, separated by a sheet of paper. If this experiment proves to be successful a permanent unit of the mica dielectric type condenser type having a capacity of .00025 microfarads, should be In stalled. Distance Record Set NATJEN, Germany, Feb. 12.—Direct radio communication between the sending station at Nauen and Buenos Aires is now maintained at given hours every night on aT wavelength of only thirty meters. This is believed to mark an epoch in radio transmission. Until recently it was assumed that great distance could only be spanned by means of long wavelengths.

HOOKUP OF ULTRA-AUDION LOW-LOSS CIRCUIT, ABOVE, WITH DETAILS SHOWING HOW TO WIND THE COILS, BELOW.

By ISRAEL KLEIN, NEA Service Radio Editor mHE old ultra-audion circuit back again. This time In modern dress. This circuit is well known among amateurs of ten and twenty years’ experience for its dependability and sensitivity, even with one tube to bring in distant stations. Os course, they can’t be very distant, but this little circuit has been known to make a station 1,000 miles away audible, one tube. With two steps of audio amplification, the circuit Is as good as many a set as large or larger. And with the inductance modernized as a low-loss coll nothing more is to be desired. Few Parts The parts of this receiver consist of: One-half pound No. 30 DCC wire. One wood block, 6x6xl Inches. Eleven quarter-inch dowel pins. Two .0005 mfd variable condensers. - One .0005 mfd fixed phone condenser. One .00025 mfd grid condenser and two megohm leak. One tube socket. One six-ohm rheostat. One “A” battery. One 22%-volt B battery. Six binding posts, panel and base. The entire set can be constructed on a six-inch by nine-inch wood base, with a seven-inch by ten-inch paneL Winding the Coils There is nothing new in the hook-up, except the low-loss coils. These are made in one, as follows: The half-pound of wire should consist of two quarter-pound spools, each of a different color silk or cotton cover. If two colors of the same wire cannot be obtained, cut off two lengths of the wire you have, each sixty-three feet long. Label the ends of one length, A and B, and the ends of the other length, C .and D, either by tying a labeled tag to each end, or any way you may see fit. Use the six-inch square block of wood as a base for the coil-wind-ing frame. On it describe a circle four inches in diameter, and divide the circumference into eleven equal parts. At each of these eleven Intersections drill a luarterinch hole in an exactly upright position and info each hole set & dowel pin. The pins must be firm and exactly upright. Now put the ends of the two differently colored wires, or ends A and C of the two similar wires, together and start winding both inside the next two pins, outside together on the form. Start at any of the pins, go outside it, then inside the next two pins, outside the next one, inside the next two, and so on until the sixty-three of wire are completely wound, with only a few inches left How to Hook Up Be sure that the wires are not twisted. Winding should be even and firm. If the wires are colored or correctly marked, the ends of the primary wire will be easily Identified as of one color, or A and B, and the ends of the secondary as of the other color, or C and D. On completion of winding, pour

| hot sealing-wax where the wires cross; let it solidify, then remove the dowel pins. End A of the primary wire goes, to the rotor of the variable condenser, Cl. End B of the primary goes to the ground. End C of the secondary goes to the stator of variable condenser C 2 and to the grid condenser and leak. End Dos the secondary goes to the ngeative terminal of the A battery. Short, direct leads should be used throughout- If you are not satisfied with the reception at the beginning, try switching the leads to the A battery. This may bring better results in the individual case. Radio Department A. H. Stuart who for the past few years has been connected with the radio game has just opened a radio department at the W. H. Messenger Furniture Company, Stuart’s experience in radio dates back to the days of WOH when this station was the joy of all crystal set owners. Sir Walter Was Fan! Sir Walter Scott wrs a dial twister, according to one of his poems, for does not Sir Walter say: Twist ye, turn ye! even so Mingle shades of jcy and woe, Hope and fear, and peace and strife In the thread of human life. Prize for Amateurs A Swedish magazine is offering SIOO to the American amateur whose station Is heard by the largest number of Swedish amateurs. Tests were made recently.
