BUTLER AGAIN LOOMS STRONG—NEXT INDEPENDENT GAMES THURSDAY

Pagemen Have Four Important Games ® Ahead With Franklin, De Pauw and Wabash Defeat Notre Dame. . Don’t count Butler out of the picture in the scramble for the State college basketball championship. The Irvington team looms as a distinct menace to all title aspirants after its decisive defeat of Notre Dame on Tuesday night at South Bend, 32 to 23. The local collegians were much in the running before the “Irish” battle, but they appear even more dangerous now.

The Pagemen have four tough hurdles to make In the closing weeks of the season. One of them Is Saturday night at the Exposition building, State fairground, when Franklin comes to town. There is talk in Franklin that Vandivier wiU be back. The Baptist star has been on the injured list Next on the program comes De Pauw on Feb. 20 at the Exposition building. The Tigers have a fast aggregation and their speed makes the team very dangerous. Franklin is met again at Franklin on Feb. 26. Then, if the locals can get over those games, will come the contest which may have much to do with the title claim. On March 4 at Crawfordsville, Wabash will be met in a return scrap. At this time the battle looks like one of the high spots of the season. tAt- Notre Dame on Tuesday night e Pagemen staged a comeback in e final period to win after trailing at the half, 18 to 13. The winners wore down the South Bend dub and scored nineteen points in the final period, while the losers were chalking up only five. The Butler scoring was divided up evenly, from the field with Christopher, Griggs, Keach an dr Colway each connecting for two goals. At the foul line Nipper tossed in seven and Christopher five. Olympic champion, and Gertrude Ederle. Her time was 28 4-5 seconds. Miss Garrati came here unheralded. She learned to swim only last August and none of the aquatic fans here expected her to win. Helen won the national pen■phion against a large field. Thelma Darby, Indianapolis, was third in the second heat of the fiftyyard event Tuesday." After a week of hard practice, the Hoosler Athletic Club basket squad will start a greatly improved line-up against the Richmond Independents in the H. A. C. gym tonight. Earlier in the season the locals were hard pressed to win by a narrow margin at Richmond and tonight, with the advantage of playing on their home fioor, they expect to demonstrate their superiority in conclusive fashion. Wally Mlddlesworth will be at floor guard again, for the Hoosiers. Stevens will be at back guard, Jessup at center and Early and Sanford at forward.

It may be noticed that Sammy Mandell, the youth from Rockford, ID., who beat Sid Terris last Friday night, is not in these pairings. But that does not mean Mandell has shunned the tournament. With more audacity than wisdom, Mandell has decided to go along through the show, fighting any men who may chance to be drawn against him, but he has been excused from the first round of the battle royal. Terris refused to go in. European candidates will get in on the tournament later.
