RIOT FOLLOWS EASTERN RING BOUT—LOCAL H. S. NET FIVES ARE BUSY
One Man Killed and Several Injured in Street Brawl After MartinBallerino Match. Bv United Press BROOKLYN, N. A., Feb. 6. —One fight fan was killed and several others slightly injured Thursday night when a free-for-all street riot followed a boxing bout in which Vincent (Pepper) Martin, Brooklyn pugilistic idol, was knocked out so completely by Mike Ballerino of Bayonne, N. J., that the local youth was taken to a hospital.
The dead man is William Faehnigen, who was fatally stabbed'* because he maintained Martin had been fouled. A blow to the lower body dropped Martin to his knee for the count In the eleventh round of a scheduled twelve-round bout. He claimed a foul, but the referee would not allow it, and declared Ballerino the winner by a knockout. As an ambulance arrived to take the Injured boxer to a hospital, members of the two factions surged Into the street. Knives, automatic pistols and blackjacks appeared like magic and turmoil followed. Extra police, who reached the scene a few minutes later, restored order only after a series of sharp encounters. Martin’s condition Is not serious. j Nut Cracker mU DOING BY THE NUMBER OF COLLEGES CLAIMING THEM AS COACHES FOR NEXT FALL, THE FOUR HORSEMEN MUST BE TRIPLETS. * • Nurmi, it is said, is not enjoying himself in this country. .... FRANKLIN SCENE OF FEATURE Wabash Invades Camp of State Champs Both Teams Crippled. Bv Times Special FRANKLIN, Ind., Feb. 6.—Franklin College’s basketball squad, minus the services of Fuzzy Vandivier and C. Friddle, two of the mainstays of the famous combination, will try and repel the fast attack of the husky, hard dribbling Wabash five tonight at the high school gym here. If the State champs ever had 'heir backs to the wall Sit is In the present situation. With two stars out that can not be satisfactorily replaced and Burl Friddle still ailing somewhat with an infected foot, the situation looks rather desperate. It. appears as though the line-up which started the Earl ham game may be used, with Lyons playing at center. B. Friddle very probably will break into the game, but whether he will start or not is a problem. Peterman and Gant are the logical choicee at forwards, with Ballard and King as guards. There will not be room enough to hold the fans who want to see the game. Practically all seats are gone now. A few general admissions will be sold at the door. The game starts at 8 o’clock. Reports from Wabash state the Scarlet has had some tough luck also, with Coffel hobbling around with a wrenched ankle. Coach Vaughan used Cripe and Cowan at the back guard post in practice Thursday. The loes is a severe one and evens up to some extent the tough "breaks” for both clubs.

STARRING SCRAP IN NEW YORK Terris and Mandell, Leading Lightweight Contenders, Battle Tonight. Bv United Press NEW YORK, Feb. 6.—Another little Jewish boy, a curly-haired youngster from the east side tenements, where Benny Leonard got his start, will make a bid for Leonard’s vacated crown tonight In Madison Square Garden. t Sammy M&ndell, “highbrow of the ring,” opposes the former newspaper butcher In what is expected to be the fastest and most active contest ig years. The bout is billed simply as a twelve-round contest between two leading aspirants for the championship vacated by Leonard, but those who do not bow in deference to the New York boxing commission regard It as a bout for the championship. Mandell of Rockford, 111., and Terris are accepted among most boxing critics as the best on the list of sixteen boxers appointed by the commission to engage in an elimination tournament to decide the new champion. In the opinion of the hard-boiled fight followers, Mandell should win on points, although he admits that twelve rounds are not so much to his liking as fifteen rounds. City Three- Cushions Roberts and Cooper will meet tonight in the city handicap threecushion billiard tourney at the Board of Trade. Thursday night Cook defeated Quinn In a close match, 45 to 44.
